To lose the police helicopter chasing you in GTA 5, break its line of sight, get out of the ground officers’ view, then stay away from the search area until your wanted stars disappear. Open ground or sky makes it easier for the helicopter to keep tracking you, even after you have escaped nearby police.
How to shake the helicopter pursuit
- Get clear of the immediate response. Move away from the base or police units, but do not fly straight over another restricted area.
- Put an obstruction between you and the helicopter. Use terrain, buildings or a covered passage to block its view. If it still tracks you, change direction and get behind another obstruction rather than continuing across open ground or sky.
- Break contact with ground officers too. A helicopter can remain a threat even when you are out of sight of police on the ground. The wanted-level tactics described by GTA Wiki’s wanted-level guide are practical guidance, not a guaranteed route for every mission or game mode.
- Stay hidden while the stars flash. Once you are out of sight, do not drive or fly back into the search area; wait until the wanted level clears.
GTA V displays wanted levels from one to five stars, which indicate police interest, according to the Xbox-hosted game manual.

If you mean the Buzzard at Fort Zancudo
Fort Zancudo is a guarded military installation, and entering it on the ground can trigger a four-star wanted level. The base includes a Buzzard attack helicopter, but stealing a vehicle can bring a police chase. Escaping the base is only the first step: you still need to break the pursuers’ line of sight and stay out of the search area. These base details come from the fan-maintained Grand Theft Wiki entry for Fort Zancudo.
Story Mode and GTA Online are different
The hiding advice above addresses a standard Story Mode pursuit. In GTA Online, Rockstar’s Title Update 1.42 notes say Lester’s “Remove Wanted Level” ability is free after completing the Doomsday Heist. That update note describes a progression-specific Online option; it should not be treated as a general Story Mode tactic or as confirmation of current availability and pricing in every Online situation.
