A hopper minecart pulls items from a container directly above it at a reported 20 items per second in Java Edition and 10 items per second in Bedrock Edition. Those figures describe the cart’s pickup from above—not the throughput of every hopper or transfer step connected to it.
Hopper minecart pickup speed by edition
| Edition | Pickup from a container above | Equivalent interval |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 20 items per second | 1 item per game tick |
| Bedrock Edition | 10 items per second | 1 item every 2 game ticks |
The figures are reported by the Minecraft Wiki content mirrored at Ronlab; the retrieved page does not state a year or a precise game release number for these rates. A Minecraft-hosted feedback post dated August 5, 2023 describes Bedrock’s rate as four times normal hopper speed and Java’s as eight times, making Bedrock half Java’s rate. That post is a community suggestion, not a formal mechanics specification.
What the rate measures—and what it does not
The quoted 20 and 10 items per second refer to a hopper minecart pulling items from a container directly above it. The cart can also collect loose item entities nearby, including items on a block directly above the track. The cited reference does not establish that every cart position, item layout, or game build will sustain the headline rate in every situation.
A full item route can be slower because each transfer step has its own rate. The reference gives ordinary hopper transfer into a hopper minecart as 2.5 items per second. A regular hopper feeding the cart—or extracting items from it—can therefore be the bottleneck, even when the cart’s overhead pickup mechanic is faster.

How items enter and leave the cart
- Pickup: the cart collects nearby loose items and can pull items from a container directly above it.
- Insertion: a regular hopper can put items into the cart at ordinary hopper speed.
- Extraction: the cart does not push its contents into containers by itself. Place a hopper underneath the track to remove items from it.
Check the activator rail if pickup stops
A powered activator rail disables a hopper minecart’s pickup function. An inactive activator rail can reenable pickup. If a cart stops collecting items, check whether it has crossed a powered activator rail before assuming the container or item route is at fault.
