Online gaming can give people a way to have fun, keep in touch and make friends. It can also interfere with sleep, movement or daily responsibilities when play becomes excessive or difficult to control. For most people, gaming is a healthy hobby; the important distinction is whether a person’s pattern of play is affecting their health, relationships or ability to manage everyday life.
How can online gaming affect social connection?
Multiplayer games give people a shared activity: players can cooperate, compete, chat and spend time together even when they are apart. Some friendships begin in a game, while gaming can also give existing friends a regular way to connect.
In a U.S. teen survey conducted by Pew Research Center on May 9, 2024, and summarized by the American Psychological Association in 2025, 72% of teen players said they played partly to spend time with others. Forty-seven percent said they had met a friend online through a game they both played, and 47% said gaming had helped their real-world friendships. These are respondents’ reported experiences, not proof that gaming produces the same social benefit for everyone.
The broader evidence is not conclusive. The World Health Organization said in January 2026 that evidence about digital technologies, including video games, and social connection is limited and mixed. A 2021 systematic review of 18 studies on massively multiplayer online games found a positive association with social wellbeing, but described the study quality as modest and the range of platforms and wellbeing measures as limited. Gaming can create opportunities for connection, but it does not guarantee friendship or replace every kind of social contact.

Digital play can also expose people to cyberbullying or contribute to isolation, as the WHO notes in its discussion of digital environments. Whether gaming brings people together or leaves someone feeling cut off depends in part on how they play and what happens in the communities they join.
What does gaming do to mental wellbeing?
People’s experiences differ. In the same U.S. teen survey, summarized by the APA in 2025, 32% of teen players said gaming helped their mental health, while 60% said it neither helped nor harmed it. These are self-reported views, not clinical outcomes; they do not show that games treat mental-health conditions or that gaming has a uniform effect.

Gaming may be enjoyable and meaningful for one person and stressful or disruptive for another. WHO describes video gaming as a healthy hobby for most users, while recognizing that a minority experience distress or marked impairment in important areas of life. Its overview also reports estimates for “problem gaming,” used as a proxy for gaming-disorder prevalence, ranging from 1.3% to 9.9% across different populations and jurisdictions. That range is not a single global estimate: prevalence measures vary, and assessment instruments are not standardized.
When does gaming become a problem?
Playing often, by itself, does not establish a disorder. WHO’s ICD-11 guidance focuses on a pattern involving impaired control, gaming taking increasing priority over other interests and daily activities, and continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences. For gaming disorder, the pattern must cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or another important area of functioning. It would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.

In everyday terms, the concern is not simply the number of hours someone plays. It is whether play is hard to control and is crowding out important parts of life or continuing despite clear harm. WHO advises paying attention to gaming that excludes daily activities and to changes in physical or psychological health or social functioning that may be attributable to the gaming pattern. A diagnosis requires the full clinical criteria; a person or family noticing a concern is not the same as establishing one.
How can online gaming affect sleep?
Sleep findings depend on the kind of play and how it fits into a person’s routine. A 2024 systematic review of 26 studies in adults found that observational studies linked excessive video gaming with poorer sleep quality and later sleep timing. Habitual or casual gaming was not linked to poor sleep in the same way. Because these findings include observational studies, they show an association, not necessarily that gaming alone caused the sleep problems.

The review’s experimental findings also varied by game type: arousing games played before bed delayed sleep onset, while non-arousing, cognitively challenging games had different results. The authors point to arousal, session duration and frequency as relevant factors. The review concerns adults and video gaming generally, so its results should not be applied unchanged to children or to every online game.
In the 2024 U.S. teen survey summarized by the APA in 2025, 41% of teen players said video gaming had negatively affected their sleep. That figure reflects respondents’ reports; it is not a clinical sleep measurement or proof that gaming caused each person’s sleep difficulty.

What physical-health concerns are possible?
WHO identifies insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, eyesight or hearing problems, musculoskeletal problems and sleep deprivation among health concerns associated with gaming behavior. These are potential concerns linked to patterns of play, not inevitable effects of gaming or of playing online specifically. The practical question is whether a person’s routine leaves room for movement, meals, rest and attention to discomfort.
Taking breaks, moving between sessions, choosing sensible play times and noticing persistent discomfort are reasonable ways to keep those considerations in view. They are practical precautions, not a guarantee against health problems or a substitute for professional advice when symptoms are persistent.
How to judge the effect on a particular person
There is no universal number of gaming hours that separates healthy play from harmful play in the evidence cited here. A more useful check is to look at changes in everyday functioning and the pattern behind them:
- Control: Can the person stop or reduce play when they intend to?
- Responsibilities: Is gaming regularly displacing sleep, school, work, relationships or other daily activities?
- Consequences: Does the person continue or escalate play despite problems they recognize?
- Wellbeing: Have sleep, physical comfort, mood or social functioning changed alongside the gaming pattern?
- Social experience: Does play feel connecting and enjoyable, or is the person dealing with harassment or increasing isolation?
These questions can help describe what is happening, but they are not a diagnostic test. If gaming is causing significant distress or impairment, a qualified health professional can assess the situation.
