After finishing the game, select Tails as your character. SEGA’s official instruction is: “You will need to complete the whole game as Sonic.”
Unlock Tails by completing the game as Sonic
- Start a game as Sonic in the mobile version of Sonic the Hedgehog Classic.
- Complete the whole game while playing as Sonic.
- Once the game is complete, choose Tails as your playable character.
SEGA Support’s character-unlock instructions list completing the whole game as Sonic as the requirement for Tails. The mobile edition includes Tails as a playable character, according to the Apple App Store listing.
Do you need all six Chaos Emeralds?
No. SEGA lists the six Chaos Emeralds as part of the separate unlock condition for Knuckles, not Tails. For Tails, the stated requirement is finishing the game as Sonic.
Which mobile version does this apply to?
These steps are for Sonic the Hedgehog Classic, SEGA’s mobile release. SEGA’s Sonic Channel app page links to the iOS and Google Play versions. The App Store listing identifies SEGA as publisher and lists Tails and Knuckles as playable characters.

If Tails does not appear
SEGA’s published instructions do not describe a separate shortcut or troubleshooting procedure for a completed save where Tails is unavailable. Check that you finished the whole game while playing as Sonic, then check the character-selection options. SEGA does not present unofficial glitches as an alternate guaranteed unlock method.
