That price and date come from contemporary newspaper reporting reproduced by Snes Central.
What did the $199.95 launch package include?
The North American package included the SNES console and Super Mario World. A buyer’s August 1991 USENET post reproduced by Snes Central lists the console, power adapter, RF adapter, AV cable, two controllers and the game, and reports paying $199.99. That is an individual transaction account, not an official pricing announcement; the contemporary newspaper report gives the reported nationwide retail price as $199.95.
When did the SNES go on sale?
The reported nationwide North American release date was September 9, 1991. An Orange County Register report reproduced by Snes Central described systems available in Southern California stores before that date, so limited earlier availability should not be confused with the nationwide launch.
Did the price change after launch?
Yes. In January 1992, the Los Angeles Times reported that Nintendo would reduce the Super NES price from $200 to $180. That later price cut is distinct from the $199.95 reported launch retail price. Los Angeles Times, January 1992.

Was that the launch price everywhere?
No. The $199.95 figure is for North America and should not be treated as a worldwide price. Nintendo’s corporate history identifies a 1990 release for the Super Famicom in Japan and a 1991 Super NES release in Europe, but does not give launch prices for those markets. Nintendo corporate history. The available evidence therefore does not support a reliable comparison of Japanese, European and North American launch prices.
