Mine an ender chest with a Silk Touch pickaxe to keep the chest block as an item. Breaking the block does not erase your stored items: your ender chest inventory is tied to your player and can be reached through another ender chest.
How to pick up an ender chest
- Put a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch in your hotbar. Silk Touch is an enchantment for pickaxes; Microsoft’s Bedrock enchantment reference explains its effect on mined blocks at Microsoft Learn.
- Mine the ender chest with that pickaxe and collect the dropped chest item. The Minecraft Wiki’s ender chest guidance says a Silk Touch pickaxe makes it drop as an item instead of eight obsidian: Minecraft Wiki.
What happens to the items inside?
The contents are not stored in the individual placed block. Mojang describes an ender chest as providing access to a player-specific inventory from any other ender chest, in any dimension. So you do not need to empty it before mining: place another ender chest to access the same stored items. See Mojang’s Block of the Month: Ender Chest.
What if you already broke it without Silk Touch?
The chest item is not the ordinary drop without Silk Touch; the Minecraft Wiki guidance says the drop is eight obsidian. You can still reach your player-specific inventory by obtaining or crafting another ender chest and placing it.
Version and edition details
Exact drops can depend on edition and version. Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 24w44a notes that an ender chest broken with an incorrect tool drops obsidian rather than nothing: Minecraft Java Edition Snapshot 24w44a. That snapshot note is version history, not a complete comparison of current Java and Bedrock behavior. The Silk Touch advice concerns the in-game enchantment, not a real-world pickaxe.
