Steam says it issues an approved refund within a week. That period starts after Steam approves the request; it is not a deadline for reviewing your request or for the money to appear in an external bank or payment account.
Steam’s refund timeline, step by step
- Submit a request: Steam Support receives your refund request. Steam’s policy does not specify how long the review will take.
- Steam reviews the request: Steam approves or declines it. The published refund window applies only after approval.
- Steam issues an approved refund: Valve says it will issue a full refund within a week of approval. This is Steam’s policy timeframe, not a measured average. The policy page lists its last update as April 23, 2024. Read Steam’s refund policy.
- The payment provider may post it later: Steam does not state how long a bank or other external payment provider may take to show the returned funds.
Where the refund goes
Steam refunds purchases to the Steam Wallet or, when supported, the original payment method. If Valve cannot refund the original method, it credits the amount to the Steam Wallet. Whether your payment method supports refunds to the original source depends on your country and payment type. Check the locale-specific Steam refund payment-method list rather than assuming another country’s options apply.

What to check if your refund has not appeared
- In Steam Support, check the request’s status to see whether it has been approved.
- If approved, check whether Steam issued the refund to your Wallet or to the original payment method.
- For a refund to the original method, verify that the method supports refunds in your country using Steam’s payment-method list.
- If Steam issued it to an external payment method, check with that provider about when it will post. Steam’s policy does not give a separate posting estimate.
