The console launched in the Americas on November 19, 2006, with a Wii Remote, a Nunchuk and Wii Sports included. That figure is the U.S. suggested retail price, not a worldwide price or a guarantee that every retailer charged exactly that amount.
What did the U.S. launch price include?
Nintendo’s announcement said the $249.99 MSRP included one wireless Wii Remote, one Nunchuk controller and Wii Sports on a disc. In the United States, the announced price therefore covered more than the console alone. Nintendo’s September 14, 2006 announcement, reproduced by Nintendo World Report, gives the price and the package contents.
Was $249.99 the Wii’s price everywhere?
No. $249.99 is the announced U.S. MSRP. Nintendo identified November 19, 2006, as the Americas launch date, while its official English-language speech gives December 2, 2006, as the Japan launch date. Those regional dates are a reminder not to treat the U.S. dollar price as a global price; the cited speech does not provide a complete regional price list. Nintendo’s December 2006 corporate speech.
Was that the price people paid?
It was Nintendo’s announced manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not a record of the price charged by every store. The announcement described the Wii as having an MSRP of $249.99 in the U.S.; actual retailer prices are not established by that figure.

#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Is $249.99 in today’s dollars?
No. It is the nominal price announced in 2006. No inflation-adjusted equivalent is established here, so the figure should not be presented as a current-dollar amount.
