The key to solving it is to read those region rules first, then place tiles by tracking how each pip value affects one or sometimes two regions.
How to play NYT Pips
Pips is not a traditional dominoes game in which players match the exposed ends of a line. Each domino covers two neighboring cells on a grid. Use every supplied tile once, cover every cell, and satisfy the rule attached to every marked region. The New York Times Company announced the game on August 18, 2025, describing it as the first game in its collection with drag-and-drop play and an interactive how-to experience; that description is the publisher’s characterization. Place tiles and check both cells
A tile’s two pip values occupy the two cells it covers. Tiles must fit the board, and their orientation matters: turning a tile swaps which value lands in which cell. A placement must obey the rules of every marked region its cells touch. Guides describe tapping a tile to rotate it and say the interface provides feedback when a rule is broken; exact controls can change as the game interface is updated. What the Pips symbols mean
Each colored or outlined region applies a condition to the pips in its cells. The rule symbol or text identifies the condition; it is the sum or relationship of the pips in the region that matters, not the values on a single domino. A reliable method for solving a Pips board
- Read every region before placing tiles. Note whether each marked area requires matching values, distinct values, an exact total, or a total above or below a threshold. Keep unmarked cells separate from those constraints.
- Begin with the tightest constraint. A small exact sum or a region that must contain distinct values can rule out many placements quickly. For an exact-sum region, list plausible combinations of remaining pips before committing tiles.
- Track tiles that cross region boundaries. A domino spanning two regions contributes one pip to each, so a placement that helps one region may make the other impossible. Check both sides before settling on a tile and orientation.
- Reserve high-pip values intentionally. High values can be useful in regions with larger exact totals or a greater-than condition, but may be difficult to fit into low totals or all-different regions. Treat this as a heuristic, not a guaranteed optimal strategy; the beginner tips in Beebom’s Pips guide likewise offer practical heuristics rather than controlled strategy results.
- Recheck the whole board after each difficult placement. Confirm that the region totals or relationships still work and that the remaining tiles can cover the open cells.
When a placement stops working
If a region can no longer meet its rule with the remaining cells and tiles, undo the last placement and test a different tile or orientation. A locally valid move can still block a neighboring region or leave an unusable board shape. Guides support trial and correction, but they do not establish that every puzzle has a unique valid arrangement; more than one solution may be possible.
