For the MachineGames story, play Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, then Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot is an optional VR side story connected to Youngblood; its exact place in the story timeline has not been established by the official sources cited here.
MachineGames story order
- Wolfenstein: The Old Blood — Set in 1946, this two-part mission in Bavaria is a standalone prequel whose events lead up to The New Order. Bethesda describes the Nazis as on the brink of winning World War II in this game. Bethesda Support identifies the setting and premise; the Steam Wolfenstein franchise listing identifies the game and its release year.
- Wolfenstein: The New Order — Play this after The Old Blood for story chronology. It was released in 2014, before its 2015 prequel, so this order intentionally differs from the games’ release sequence. Steam’s franchise listing.
- Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus — Continue the main story after The New Order. Its official Steam listing gives the setting as America in 1961. Steam’s franchise listing.
- Wolfenstein: Youngblood — Play this next. The game follows B.J. Blazkowicz’s twin daughters, Jess and Soph, searching for their father in an alternate-history 1980s Paris. Bethesda quoted MachineGames executive producer Jerk Gustafsson describing the setting and its young heroines in its 2019 announcement.
Where Cyberpilot fits
Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot is an optional VR-exclusive story set in Paris and connected to Youngblood. Bethesda says the two games stand on their own while inviting players to notice their links. The official material cited here does not give Cyberpilot a precise in-story date relative to Youngblood, so treat it as an adjacent side story rather than placing it definitively before or after. Steam’s franchise listing; Bethesda’s announcement.

Chronological order or release order?
Choose chronological order to follow the events from the 1946 prequel onward. Choose release order if you would rather experience the sequence players encountered the modern main games, with The New Order before its prequel.
| Approach | Order | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Story chronology | The Old Blood → The New Order → The New Colossus → Youngblood | Begins with the 1946 events that lead into The New Order. |
| Main-game release order | The New Order (2014) → The Old Blood (2015) → The New Colossus (2017) → Youngblood (2019) | Preserves the original release sequence, including the prequel after The New Order. |
Steam lists Cyberpilot alongside Youngblood among the 2019 releases; because the cited official sources do not establish its exact timeline position, it is not included in either definitive sequence. Steam’s franchise listing.

Does this order include every Wolfenstein game?
No. This is a practical order for the MachineGames story, not a unified chronology for every game carrying the Wolfenstein name. The franchise spans releases from the original Castle Wolfenstein (1981) and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein (1984) through Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and later entries. Xbox Wire’s franchise history identifies those distinct eras. Xbox Wire.
MachineGames has described The Old Blood as a homage to Return to Castle Wolfenstein; that connection does not establish Return as a required prequel in the same continuity. MachineGames: Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. The official histories cited here do not provide one definitive chronology linking every classic game, the 2009 entry, and the MachineGames story.
