Get and equip a Mask
A Mask is the reported requirement for both stealing objects and pickpocketing NPCs. PowerPyx says you can loot a Mask from bandits around Hernand or buy one at the Back Alley Shop south of Hernand Castle. Equip it from your Inventory before attempting either action. IGN’s guide search result also identifies a Mask as necessary, though the page itself was not available for review. PowerPyx’s guide and IGN’s guide listing describe the requirement.
Steal a placed item
- Put on your Mask from the Inventory.
- Approach an item marked as stealable; these are often found inside houses, according to PowerPyx.
- When the Steal prompt appears, use the input shown on screen. Controls can vary by platform, so follow the in-game prompt rather than relying on a fixed button.
Pickpocket an NPC
- With the Mask equipped, walk into the NPC to trigger the Pickpocket prompt.
- Activate the displayed input quickly. PowerPyx reports that the prompt lasts about one to two seconds, so be ready to respond as soon as it appears.
Get away and understand the risk
After a theft, leave the red search area to reduce the chance of being caught. PowerPyx reports that each theft costs five faction reputation points; it also says being caught sends the character to jail and removes the Mask. Treat those consequences, including the five-point figure, as details reported by that third-party guide rather than official publisher-confirmed rules. The guide is dated March 29, 2026, and game updates may change how the system works.
No official publisher explanation of the theft mechanic is established in the available sources. Pearl Abyss’s official Crimson Desert page lists the game’s editions but does not substantiate the mechanics described above.
