To start A Pirate’s Life in Sea of Thieves, visit Castaway’s Camp at any Outpost and vote on the journal for the Tall Tale you want to play. You can also choose the A Pirate’s Life option from the main menu; Rare’s FAQ says this starts your session near the camp. The FAQ dates to the campaign’s June 2021 launch, so menu wording may have changed.
Start a Tall Tale at Castaway’s Camp
- Go to an Outpost. Find Castaway’s Camp, where the journals for the five A Pirate’s Life Tall Tales are kept.
- Choose a journal and vote on it. Pick the first Tale to begin the campaign, or select a Tale for which you have a checkpoint to continue earlier progress. Rare’s FAQ confirms the journal-voting process; the exact current journal display order is not specified.
- Begin the Tale. Follow the in-game prompt after the vote to set sail on your chosen adventure.
Rare’s official FAQ also describes an A Pirate’s Life option on the main menu that starts a session near Castaway’s Camp. Because that instruction is from the 2021 launch FAQ, check the current menu if the option is not displayed as described.

Resume a checkpoint or play through later
You do not need to finish a Tall Tale in one sitting. Rare says checkpoints let you stop and resume from that point when you return. At the camp, vote on the journal for the Tale associated with your progress; the FAQ says journal voting can continue a previous Tall Tale checkpoint.
Know what to expect
Five stories, playable solo or with a crew
A Pirate’s Life is a story campaign combining Sea of Thieves with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. It contains five Tall Tales and can be played solo or with a crew. Rare’s 2021 FAQ estimated eight to twelve hours to complete all five at a steady pace; that is a launch-era developer estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

Some areas are crew-only; others are shared
Rare’s Season Three release notes distinguish between sections in the Sea of the Damned, where only your crew is present, and sections in the wider shared world, where you may encounter other player crews. Portals provide access to some locations during A Pirate’s Life and Captains of the Damned.
Sell treasure before entering a portal
Before a Tunnels of the Damned crossing, sell any treasure aboard your ship at the nearest Outpost. Rare’s release notes explain that the portal transports your crew’s ship, but not the treasure on board.

If you are unfamiliar with the game’s basics, Rare recommends starting with the Maiden Voyage tutorial. The official Pirate Academy also offers short lessons.
