Storms can increase filter use and make modules more prone to failure, so decide whether to shelter or work outside based on what your base can withstand and what the expedition could gain.
What magnetic storms put at risk
Magnetic storms are a base-management hazard as well as an outdoor-exposure risk. The game-specific Magnetic Storms reference reports that the Radiation Barrier consumes Radiation Filters faster during a storm and that modules are more prone to breaking down and needing repairs. That makes both filter reserves and repair capacity relevant to your preparations.

Prepare the base before the storm
- Check Repair Kits. Keep a stock available so you can respond if a storm knocks out vital base functions. Epic Games Store’s beginner’s guide recommends keeping Repair Kits on hand but does not give a universal quantity.
- Build a Metal and Organic buffer. Epic’s guide highlights both as resources to prioritize. Set a reserve that fits your base’s production, planned repairs, and other demands; no fixed target is established for every setup.
- Check Radiation Filters and the Radiation Barrier. The storm reference says filter consumption rises during storms. Consider your remaining supply alongside the barrier’s condition and your other base needs.
- Review module protection research. A game-specific Modules reference describes Module Shield research as mitigating storm strain and says Module Shields II nullify it. Check your current research tree and in-game tooltips to confirm what is available and what your upgrade covers.
Shelter or go outside?
There is no universally correct choice. Epic’s Gamescom preview describes storms as a reason to bunker down, while noting that irradiated resources may make exposure worthwhile. The Magnetic Storms reference also describes resources appearing after storms. Weigh the potential gain against the exposure and the attention your base may need.
- Shelter when: filter or Repair Kit reserves are tight, modules need attention, or the base cannot comfortably absorb additional maintenance demands.
- Consider outside work when: the resource opportunity is valuable or urgent and your supplies and ability to maintain the base make the risk acceptable.
Use your current supplies, base condition, the importance of the resources outside, and your tolerance for exposure to make the call. The available references give no exact thresholds that determine when an expedition is safe or worthwhile.

The Magnetic Storms reference describes resources appearing after storms, so check the area for any newly available materials before moving on.
