In the Crosswordle game on Crosswordle.com, the letters are already on the grid: you solve the puzzle by swapping them into place, not by typing word guesses. Green, yellow and grey tiles show how letters fit the intersecting across and down words.

What is Crosswordle?

Crosswordle.com is a letter-swapping browser puzzle. Its board starts with visible but scrambled letters, and the goal is to arrange them so every across and down word is correctly placed. The name is also used by a separate game at Crosswordle.org, where players guess words; the rules below apply specifically to Crosswordle.com.

What do the tile colors mean?

  • Green: The letter is in the correct position and cannot be swapped.
  • Yellow: The letter belongs in that horizontal or vertical word, but is in the wrong position.
  • Grey: The letter belongs in a different horizontal or vertical word.

Use green tiles as fixed information. For yellow and grey tiles, consider both the letter’s possible position and the words it intersects; a move affects the across and down constraints at once.

How to make a swap and solve the grid

  1. Look over the scrambled grid and use the colors to identify letters that are already fixed and those that need to move.
  2. Tap or select one letter, then tap or select a second letter. Their positions are exchanged.
  3. Check how the exchange affects both the across and down words, then choose further swaps until all words are correctly placed.

The official instruction is: “Solve the Crosswordle by swapping the letters to the correct position. Tap two letters to swap their positions.” You do not submit a word guess for each turn.

Modes, grid sizes and scoring

Crosswordle.com describes daily and unlimited play, 7×7 and 9×9 grids, and an archive. Its stated scoring system awards one star for each swap remaining after you solve the puzzle. The site presents six swaps remaining as the attainable perfect score; this is the site’s scoring rule, not an independently measured benchmark.
