Unlock your starting clan’s abilities by earning Ability Points (AP) and spending them in its Ability Tree. To access another clan’s powers, first visit that clan’s representative in Seattle; a post-launch guide reports that this also requires Blood Resonance. Then spend AP in the tree to unlock the ability. Cross-clan costs can vary with Discipline overlap, and you cannot learn another clan’s passive.

Unlock abilities from your starting clan

At the beginning of the game, choose one of the six playable clans: Brujah, Banu Haqim, Tremere, Ventrue, Toreador or Lasombra. Your choice determines the starting Ability Tree and gives you that clan’s unique passive. Paradox’s clan and ability overview describes the tree as the place to unlock abilities.

  1. Earn AP by completing missions, fighting and exploring.
  2. Open the Ability Tree and spend AP on the abilities you want.
  3. To earn that clan’s clan perk, unlock all of its abilities. Paradox describes the perk at the top of the tree as a permanent passive upgrade.

AP is the currency used to unlock abilities. The available official information does not establish a universal AP cost list, so check the cost shown for each ability in your game.

Unlock abilities from another clan

Find the clan’s representative

Paradox says important vampires around Seattle can offer their blood to help you unlock abilities from their clan. A post-launch PC Gamer guide identifies these characters as primogens and reports that Blood Resonance is needed to access their clan powers. The guide says Blood Resonance comes from feeding on humans experiencing specific emotions or completing side quests; Paradox’s cited pages do not independently confirm those resource sources.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 (Xbox Series X)
  • Blood sustains you and empowers your vampiric Disciplines. You’ll stalk and feed on the city’s population at night. Use your supernatural powers or raw persuasion on unsuspecting mortals to lure them into dark alleys and slake your Hunger.
  • Enter the World of Darkness and rise through vampire society or rail against it. Experience Seattle - a city full of alluring, dangerous characters and factions, not to mention the mortals at stake in the clash of powers beyond their knowing.
  • Hunt your way through a modern-night Seattle on the brink of an open supernatural war in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, where visceral vampire action meets a neo-noir murder mystery. Navigate the vampire Court of Seattle and its dark underbelly in this action RPG, realized by the BAFTA award-winning studio The Chinese Room.

Use Blood Resonance for access, then AP to unlock

Blood Resonance and AP serve different roles in this process. The guide describes Blood Resonance as part of accessing another clan’s powers; Paradox describes AP as the currency for unlocking abilities in the Ability Tree. Reaching a representative or meeting the Resonance requirement does not replace the AP purchase.

Expect costs to depend on Discipline overlap

Paradox says an ability associated with a Discipline your clan already has can cost less AP than one associated with an unfamiliar Discipline. Its example is Ventrue: Brujah’s Presence-based Taunt costs less than an ability tied to Obfuscate, which Ventrue do not have. This is an example, not a complete cost chart; no universal ranking or exact costs across clans are established.

What you can and cannot learn

  • You can learn other clans’ activated abilities and clan perks.
  • You cannot acquire another clan’s unique passive through cross-clan training.
  • Paradox says additional clan perks can stack.

When deciding where to spend AP, consider whether an ability is from your starting clan or another clan, whether its Discipline overlaps with yours, and whether it supports your playstyle. If you are pursuing a clan perk, remember that Paradox ties it to unlocking all abilities for that clan. The game is designed so that each clan has a straightforward playstyle and does not require ability optimization, according to Paradox’s Ventrue feature.

If a clan or ability is unavailable

Paradox’s September 9, 2026 final-patch announcement lists fixes for quest and progression blockers, including an Onda/Mrs. Thorn side-quest interaction that could prevent access to the Atrium. It does not announce a change to the clan-ability unlock rules. If a quest or interaction prompt blocks progress, check that the game is updated and consult the patch notes.

Paradox previously advised players who found Lasombra or Toreador locked at clan selection on some platforms to update and reinstall. That is historical support guidance, not a guaranteed current fix: the later patch notes do not say whether that specific issue was addressed.
