For Minecraft Java Edition’s standard game directory, open the folder for your operating system: %appdata%.minecraftmods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods on macOS, or ~/.minecraft/mods on Linux. Paste the path into your file browser’s location field. If you use CurseForge or another launcher with separate instances, open the game folder for the specific profile you play instead.
Open the standard Java Edition mods folder
These paths are for Java Edition. The Fabric documentation lists them as the standard locations; your launcher may use a different game directory.
| Operating system | Path | How to open it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%.minecraftmods |
Press Windows+R, paste the path and press Enter, or paste it into File Explorer’s address bar. |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods |
In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, paste the path and press Enter. |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/mods |
Open your file manager and enter the path in its location field. |
Place compatible mod files in the folder used by the Minecraft profile you intend to launch. Only download mods from sources you trust, as the Fabric documentation advises.
If there is no mods folder
A missing folder does not necessarily mean Minecraft is broken. First confirm that you are looking in the correct game directory and that you have set up the intended mod-loader installation. The CurseForge manual installation guide says to create a folder named mods inside the game directory if it is absent. For the standard Windows location, that means creating mods inside %appdata%.minecraft.

Do not create it in the standard directory if your launcher stores the profile elsewhere; create or use the folder inside that profile’s game directory.
Find the folder for CurseForge or another launcher
CurseForge
CurseForge creates a dedicated Minecraft modding environment by default, separate from the standard .minecraft directory. Its support guide gives these default roots:
- Windows:
C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft - macOS:
/Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/ - Linux:
/home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft
The app’s Advanced setting can change the location, so use the active installation’s game folder if you have customized it. CurseForge supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Vanilla profiles; the selected profile and its game version determine which mods can load.
Prism Launcher and other instance-based launchers
In Prism Launcher, select the instance, choose Edit, then open Mods to manage or add mod files for that instance. The Fabric Wiki’s launcher instructions describe this workflow. Other launchers may store each instance separately; use that launcher’s folder controls rather than assuming the standard .minecraft path.

Why mods may not appear
- Wrong directory: Make sure the files are in the game folder belonging to the profile you launch, especially if you use a custom or instance-specific directory.
- Wrong profile: Launch the installation configured with the mod loader, not a separate vanilla profile.
- Version or loader mismatch: Check that a mod is for Java Edition and matches both the Minecraft version and loader used by the profile. Fabric’s instructions also note that most Fabric mods require Fabric API; follow each mod’s stated requirements.
