To unlock the Exotic Khvostov 7G-0X, complete two Pale Heart collection tracks: get the Legendary Khvostov using the Lost Encryption Code, and collect the Mote of Primordial Light from Traveler Visions and Overthrow bosses. Then take both items to the Exotic chest in the Lost City. This guide reflects Bungie’s support information available in 2026; its notes about Triumph tracking and inventory issues are historical and dated below.
How the Khvostov unlock works
The Exotic chest has two prerequisites, not one: the Legendary Khvostov and the Mote of Primordial Light. One track uses region chests and Cyst rubble piles to obtain a Lost Encryption Code; the other combines objectives tied to Visions of the Traveler and Overthrow bosses. Bungie confirms both items are required at the final chest.

Track 1: Get the Legendary Khvostov
Collect the Lost Encryption Bits
Search Pale Heart region chests and rubble piles inside Cyst activities. Bungie’s support guidance identifies both sources. A community checklist gives the commonly used total as 15 bits: nine from region chests and six from Cysts. Treat that breakdown as a checklist count, not a total stated in Bungie’s support post. Once the intended chests and piles have been interacted with, the Lost Encryption Code is awarded. Bungie Help’s June 18, 2024 support response confirms the source categories and discusses tracking issues.
Use the code in the Divide
Take the Lost Encryption Code to the chest in the Divide and open it to claim the Legendary Khvostov. Keep this weapon: it is one of the two required items for the Exotic chest.

Track 2: Collect the Mote of Primordial Light
Collect and place all Visions of the Traveler, and defeat Overthrow bosses in each Pale Heart area. These objectives provide individual Motes that combine into the Mote of Primordial Light used at the final chest. Bungie’s support guidance identifies the objectives but does not state an official total. A commonly documented checklist counts eight Visions and nine unique Overthrow bosses; use that as a checklist, not as a total verified in the cited official response. Bungie’s support response describes Visions and Overthrow bosses as Mote objectives.
Open the Exotic Khvostov chest
- Make sure you have both the Legendary Khvostov and the Mote of Primordial Light.
- Go to the final Exotic chest in the Lost City.
- Interact with the chest to claim Khvostov 7G-0X.
Bungie explicitly lists the Legendary weapon and Mote as the chest’s prerequisites. If the interact prompt does not appear, try approaching from another side; a Bungie support reply specifically suggests trying the back of the chest. Bungie Help’s July 10, 2024 reply documents the requirements and workaround.

If Khvostov is not unlocking
Triumphs say complete, but a reward is missing
In a June 2024 support response, Bungie warned that Triumphs for region chests, rubble piles, and Overthrow bosses could show completion before the intended requirements were met. If a code or Mote is missing, check the actual chests and Cyst rubble piles, and confirm that you defeated the required unique Overthrow bosses rather than relying on the Triumph alone. This is a dated historical tracking warning, not evidence that the same issue is currently occurring. Bungie’s June 18, 2024 response
Encryption Bits were collected with a full inventory
Bungie’s June 25, 2024 Update 8.0.0.5 patch notes say an issue that could block Khvostov acquisition when Encryption Bits were collected with a full inventory was fixed. The note describes a patched issue, not a current workaround. Update 8.0.0.5 patch notes

The final chest says something is missing
Check that the character has both the Legendary Khvostov and the Mote of Primordial Light. If both are present but the prompt is absent, try the chest from another side, including the back, as Bungie’s July 2024 support reply suggests.

Bungie’s June 9, 2026 support guide says existing available content remains available after June 9, 2026. It also says Destiny 2 is not planned to receive further live-service content updates, though stability hotfixes may still be needed. That describes Bungie’s stated plans in that guide, not a guarantee that no future changes will occur. The guide does not establish a complete account-entitlement or campaign-prerequisite list for this unlock, so check the game’s current access requirements rather than assuming a specific purchase or edition is necessary.
