Combine an Efficiency IV tool with another compatible Efficiency IV tool in an anvil, or apply an Efficiency IV enchanted book to the tool. The tool-to-tool method uses a second item of the same type and material; the anvil shows the experience cost before you commit.
Upgrade Efficiency IV to Efficiency V with an anvil
- Place an anvil and open its interface.
- Put the Efficiency IV tool you want to keep in the first slot.
- Choose one of these inputs for the second slot: another Efficiency IV tool of the same type and material, or an Efficiency IV enchanted book that can be applied to the target.
- Check the output. It should show the intended tool with Efficiency V, and the displayed experience cost must be affordable.
- Take the output to complete the upgrade. The second input is consumed.
Minecraft’s official anvil guide explains that enchanted books can add their enchantment to tools and says this costs less XP than combining two enchanted tools.

| Combine two tools | Two Efficiency IV tools with the same item type and material | The second tool is consumed. The anvil displays the XP cost. |
| Apply an Efficiency IV book | The target tool and an applicable Efficiency IV enchanted book | The book is consumed; Minecraft says applying a book costs less XP than combining two enchanted tools. |
| Make an Efficiency V book first | Two Efficiency IV books, followed by a compatible tool | Requires two anvil operations: combine the books, then apply the resulting book. Check the cost for each operation. |
Can I combine two Efficiency IV pickaxes?
Yes, if they are both the same kind of pickaxe and made from the same material. Put the pickaxe you want to keep in the first slot and the other in the second. A wooden pickaxe and an iron pickaxe are not a matching pair for this tool-combination method. The second pickaxe is consumed when you take the result.
Can I use an Efficiency IV book?
Yes. Put the tool in the first anvil slot and the Efficiency IV book in the second. The official anvil guide describes using enchanted books to add an enchantment to a tool. If you have two Efficiency IV books instead, combine them in an anvil to make an Efficiency V book, then apply that book to the tool in a separate operation.

How much XP does the anvil cost?
There is no single XP cost that applies to every upgrade. The anvil calculates the cost for the specific items; enchantments, repairs, renaming, and previous anvil work can affect it. Read the cost shown in the interface before taking the output. The official guide states that the book method costs less XP than combining two enchanted tools, but it does not give one universal price for this particular upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if the output is not Efficiency V?
- Confirm that both tool enchantments are Efficiency IV, rather than different levels.
- For the tool-to-tool method, confirm that both items have the same type and material.
- Check that the target can receive Efficiency and that the second item or book is applicable.
- Do not take the output unless it shows the intended tool and Efficiency V.
Minecraft Help lists Efficiency’s maximum enchantment level as 5: Minecraft enchantment list. Efficiency increases mining speed, but Efficiency V by itself does not guarantee instant mining; the result depends on the block, tool, and other conditions. Exact edge cases can vary by edition or update, so use the displayed anvil result in your current game as the practical check.
