You can’t craft a cobweb block in vanilla Minecraft Survival. Find a naturally generated cobweb and break it with shears to collect the block. Use a regular sword instead if you want string.
How to get a cobweb block
- Find a naturally generated cobweb. Mojang lists strongholds, abandoned mineshafts, woodland mansions, igloo basements, and abandoned villages as locations where cobwebs can appear. See Mojang’s Block of the Week: Cobweb.
- Break the cobweb with shears. This is the way to collect the cobweb block itself.
There is no crafting recipe for the cobweb block in standard vanilla Survival, so harvesting a generated block is the practical alternative.
Choose your tool by the drop you want
| Tool | Result |
|---|---|
| Shears | Collects the cobweb block. |
| Regular sword | Breaks the cobweb as fast as shears, but drops string instead of the block, according to Mojang. |
Where cobwebs generate
Mojang’s December 2020 article names strongholds, abandoned mineshafts, woodland mansions, igloo basements, and abandoned villages. That list reflects the locations described in that article; generation can differ by edition and game version. Trial chambers are also listed as a generation location in the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki reference, so treat them as version-dependent rather than assuming every world has them.

What cobwebs are useful for
- Slowing movement: Cobwebs slow mobs and players, making them useful for traps or controlling movement.
- Reducing fall damage: A cobweb can slow a fall, which can help prevent fall damage.
- Delaying items: Items falling through a cobweb can be delayed before reaching a pressure plate or hopper. Mojang gives about 25 seconds as an illustrative example; it is not a universal timing guarantee.
