Open the Mob Effects panel to see which status effects are active and, in the reported keyboard setup, how much time remains. The Mojang issue report identifies Z as the default keyboard control in that context. On consoles, mobile, or a different layout, check your in-game controls for the assigned Mob Effects control.

Open the Mob Effects panel

  1. Open the Mob Effects panel using the control assigned to your device. The Mojang issue report identifies Z as the default keyboard control in its reported setup; controls can differ by platform or customized bindings. Mojang Bug Tracker
  2. Read the list of active effects and their remaining times in the panel.
  3. If the HUD icons and the panel do not match, use the panel to check whether an effect is still listed.

What to do if effect icons are missing

A Mojang issue report created October 11, 2023 documented a case in which effect badges disappeared while the Mob Effects panel still showed the active effect and its remaining time. The report was resolved October 22, 2023, with a fix recorded in version 1.20.50.21 Preview. That historical, version-specific bug report does not show that missing icons are common in current releases. Mojang Bug Tracker

If you suspect the status-effects HUD element was hidden, an operator can restore its default visibility with /hud <target> reset status_effects. Microsoft Learn lists status_effects as a HUD element and says the /hud command requires cheats. This resets HUD visibility; it does not open a detailed list of active effects. Microsoft Learn: hud Command

Why /effect does not show your active effects

The /effect command is for adding or clearing status effects, not opening the player’s Mob Effects panel. Microsoft Learn documents its add and clear forms and notes that cheats are required. Microsoft Learn: effect Command
