The steps depend on your Minecraft edition and what you mean by “resolution.” Fullscreen and window size control how the game fits your display; GUI Scale changes the size of menus and the HUD; graphics settings affect visual quality and performance. Official guidance does not establish one universal in-game pixel-resolution selector for every edition and device.
First, identify what you want to change
- Game size on screen: switch between fullscreen and windowed play, or resize the window.
- Display pixel resolution: choose an output mode supported by your computer, console, monitor, or TV. This is separate from making Minecraft fullscreen.
- Menu and HUD size: adjust GUI Scale in the game’s video settings.
- Graphics quality or performance: change the available video or graphics options. These affect rendering, not necessarily the display’s pixel mode.
Java and Bedrock have different settings, and Bedrock’s available options vary by device.
Change fullscreen or window size in Java Edition
- Open Minecraft and select Options (or Settings, depending on the launcher or version), then open Video Settings.
- Toggle Fullscreen to fill the display. In Java Edition 26.3, borderless fullscreen is the default; the release notes say you can switch between borderless and exclusive fullscreen without restarting. Mojang’s Java Edition 26.3 release notes provide the version-specific details.
- For windowed play, resize the Minecraft window using your operating system’s window controls. Java Edition 26.3 documents a minimum window size of 320 by 240 pixels.
- If you need a particular pixel mode, such as 1920 × 1080, check the display modes supported in your operating system’s display settings and by your monitor. The cited Java release notes do not describe a universal in-game pixel-resolution picker.
Java Edition 26.3 also provides a separate scale setting for the debug overlay in Debug Options, opened with F3 + F6. This changes the overlay’s size, not the game’s display resolution.
Find video settings in Bedrock Edition
- From the title screen, open Settings > Video. Minecraft Help identifies this as the Bedrock video-settings path. Minecraft Help
- Review the options available on your specific device. Bedrock runs on PC, consoles, and mobile, and the controls are not identical across platforms.
- On compatible devices, choose Settings > Video > Graphics Mode to select Vibrant Visuals. Its video settings include Favor Visuals and Favor Performance presets, with further controls under Vibrant Visuals Options. These tune graphics and performance; they are not a universal pixel-resolution setting. Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals information
- If the picture does not fit the screen, check the device’s display settings or the TV’s picture settings as well as Minecraft’s options.
Minecraft Help’s graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends adjusting video settings for graphics or performance problems and directs Java players to edition-specific help. Minecraft Help: graphics troubleshooting

Make the menus or HUD larger or smaller
Change GUI Scale in the game’s video settings when menus, text, or HUD elements look too large or too small. GUI Scale changes interface size; it does not change the monitor’s pixel mode. In Java Edition 26.3, the debug overlay has its own scale control through F3 + F6.
Troubleshoot common display problems
- Minecraft does not fill the display: check the game’s fullscreen or window mode, then check the computer, console, or TV display settings.
- The game window is too small: resize it with your operating system’s window controls. In Java Edition 26.3, the documented minimum is 320 × 240 pixels.
- The HUD or text is hard to read: change GUI Scale rather than the display pixel mode.
- Bedrock performance is poor: lower demanding options in Settings > Video. On compatible devices using Vibrant Visuals, try Favor Performance.
- The image looks blurry or stretched: check the computer or console’s output resolution and the monitor or TV aspect ratio. The names and availability of display modes depend on the device.
What Minecraft’s Java resolution targets mean
Mojang’s system requirements page, published July 21, 2026, lists Java Edition targets of 1080p at 30 FPS using the Fast preset as a minimum target, and 1080p at 60 FPS using the Fancy preset as a recommended target. These are hardware and performance targets, not instructions to force Minecraft to a particular resolution. The page says Java performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed below the new minimum requirements. Minecraft Java Edition system requirements
