If Minecraft Bedrock says “Could not connect: Outdated Client,” update Minecraft on the device showing the error. The message means the game and the world or server are using protocol versions that are not compatible. If the message says “Outdated Server,” the host or server owner needs to update the server instead.
What “Outdated Client” means
Microsoft explains that “Outdated Client” and “Outdated Server” errors happen when the client and server have a mismatch in protocol versions. Bedrock protocol compatibility can change between minor versions and even between patch versions, so similar-looking version numbers do not guarantee that two builds can connect. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide gives examples of both kinds of version difference; those examples illustrate compatibility changes and are not the current release number.

This error points first to a software-version mismatch; by itself, it does not indicate a networking, account, or hardware fault.
Update Minecraft on your platform
Use the official store or console update controls. Menu names can change, so if a label differs, look for the platform’s current update option for Minecraft. Minecraft’s official update guide covers platform update routes.

Android, iPhone, and iPad
Search for Minecraft in Google Play or the App Store and apply an available update. Minecraft says mobile devices normally update automatically, but provides manual update guidance for mobile devices when they do not.
On mobile, open Minecraft and read the version number at the bottom-right of the launch screen. Compare it with the version shown in the relevant store listing.

If no update appears or the error persists
- Check the platform’s update screen, then compare the in-game version with the store listing where available.
- Ask your friend or server owner to check their game version and, for a private server, the server build.
- If your store shows no newer update but the server still reports a mismatch, the server owner should verify and update the server as needed.
There is no single update-release timeline that applies to every platform, account, and region, so an update should not be expected after a specific number of hours. For current version records, consult the Minecraft release changelogs; the version available to install can depend on the platform.
For a privately administered Bedrock server, Microsoft’s server guide distinguishes the responsibility clearly: update the client for “Outdated Client,” and update the server for “Outdated Server.”
