To remove one mod from an individually managed Aternos Minecraft Java server, stop the server, open Files in the Aternos panel, delete the intended mod file, then restart the server and check the console. First check the mod’s dependencies and back up the world if it contains modded content you want to keep. This method does not apply to individual mods inside an Aternos-installed modpack.

Remove one mod from an individually managed server

  1. Stop the server. Make file changes while it is offline.
  2. Open Files. In your server’s Aternos panel, go to Files and find the mod file you intend to remove. Aternos identifies the Files area as the place to delete unused mods: Aternos storage guidance.
  3. Check dependencies, then delete only that file. Another mod may require it, so review the mod’s listing or its CurseForge or Modrinth description first. Aternos’ mod guidance explains that mods can have dependencies: Installing mods on Aternos.
  4. Start the server and inspect the console. Look for startup errors. If the server will not start, restore the mod file or a backup and check the mod’s compatibility instructions.
  5. Check player clients. Players need the same mod loader and version as the server, along with matching installed mods. Removing a mod from the server may therefore mean players need to update their client setup too. Aternos supports loaders including Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt; the exact file location and panel controls can vary by setup.

Can you remove one mod from an Aternos modpack?

No. Aternos says its supported modpacks are provided as complete experiences, and individual mods or configurations inside them cannot be changed. Choose another supported pack if you want a different set of mods. For custom modpack uploads, Aternos points users to exaroton, which supports custom uploads: Aternos custom modpacks guidance.

Will deleting a mod damage the world?

That depends on the mod and what players have built or stored using it. The Aternos guidance cited here does not establish what happens to a particular mod’s blocks, items, entities, or saved data when its file is removed. Back up the world before removing a mod whose content has been used, and consult that mod’s documentation. A backup gives you a way to recover if the world no longer behaves as expected.

What permissions do you need?

On a shared server, the owner must grant you Files permission to browse, edit, and delete files such as mods. The separate Plugins/Mods permission covers the addon browser and installing mods; it does not replace Files access for deleting a file. See Aternos access permissions.

Do not reinstall the server to remove one mod

Removing a mod file is different from reinstalling or deleting the server. Aternos warns that reinstalling wipes server data, including world files, and that deleting a server permanently removes its stored data. Back up anything you may need before either destructive operation: Aternos server deletion, reinstall, and reset guidance.

If the file is a plugin, not a mod

Plugins require plugin-compatible server software and use a different management path. Do not assume that removing a plugin follows the mod-file instructions; check the server software and the plugin’s setup guidance first.
