How to Fix Fallout 4 Crashing on Xbox One

Restart Fallout 4 and power-cycle your Xbox One first. Then troubleshoot Creations, save-loading problems, or main-menu hangs without deleting your saved-game files.

Start by quitting Fallout 4 and power-cycling your Xbox One. If it still crashes, test without Creations or mods; if the game will not open, clear only Fallout 4’s Reserved Space—not your saved-game files. The right next step depends on whether the crash happens at startup, while loading one save, or at the main menu.

Try the safe, quick fixes first

  1. Quit and relaunch Fallout 4. Press the Xbox button to open the Guide, highlight Fallout 4, press the Menu button, and select Quit. Start the game again from Home. This is Bethesda’s recommended first step for crashes. Bethesda’s Xbox crash guidance
  2. Power-cycle the console. Hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds, unplug its power cable for 10 seconds, reconnect it, then turn the console back on. Bethesda includes this step in its crash and loading troubleshooting. Crash guidance; main-menu loading guidance

If you use Creations or mods, test the game without them

Creations can cause crashes, black screens, or visual errors. Bethesda notes that a Creation may stop working properly after a Fallout 4 update if its creator has not updated it, and that Creations can cause problems even without a recent update. If you can reach the game’s Creations menu, disable or delete the Creations and test the game again. Bethesda Support

If Fallout 4 will not open

Clear Fallout 4’s Reserved Space to remove its mod data when the game cannot load. From My Games & Apps, highlight Fallout 4, open Manage Game, select Reserved Space, then choose Clear reserved space. Bethesda’s instructions distinguish this from saved-game files: do not delete your actual saves. Bethesda’s stuck-loading and mods guidance

If the crash happens while loading a particular save

Try an earlier save, or one that was not made with mods. Bethesda marks modded saves with [M]. Disable or remove mods, then see whether an earlier or unmodded save loads. If that works, the issue may be tied to the affected save or its mod setup rather than every save in the game. Bethesda’s Xbox One save-loading guidance

If Fallout 4 is stuck at the main menu

A main-menu loading problem can involve local save data or cloud synchronization. Bethesda provides separate procedures for trying to load local data offline and for restarting the game offline, reconnecting, and restarting again so cloud saves can resynchronize. Cloud saves are unavailable while the console is offline, so use Bethesda’s main-menu troubleshooting steps carefully and follow the sequence that matches your situation.

Reinstall only after the other steps fail

If restarting, power-cycling, testing without Creations, and trying another save have not fixed persistent crashes, uninstall and reinstall Fallout 4. Bethesda’s instruction is to remove the game itself, not your saved-game files: “Do not delete your save files, but only the game itself.” Bethesda Support

Could a Creations update be involved?

Bethesda published a console Creations storage and load-order notice on November 21, 2025. It said a May 27, 2026 update would significantly increase Creations storage on consoles and reset console load orders; the notice advised players to save their load order before the update and said Fallout 4 saves older than November 10, 2025 were expected to be impacted. This is relevant context if you use Creations, but it does not establish that the update caused a particular player’s crash. Bethesda’s Creations storage and load-order notice

When to contact support

If Xbox console problems continue after these steps, Bethesda directs players to Xbox Support. Bethesda’s troubleshooting does not identify one universal cause; the crash point, error message, active Creations, and affected save can help narrow down what is happening.
