If Helldivers 2 crashes or refuses to start around the GameGuard screen, begin with reversible checks: restart your PC, remove any mods, verify the game files in Steam, and note the exact error or crash behavior. If the failure appears tied to GameGuard, reinstalling it with the tools included in the game folder is one reported option—not a guaranteed fix. Change one thing at a time, and do not leave antivirus disabled.
First, identify what happens when you launch
Before changing settings, note whether the game never opens, exits after the GameGuard splash, reaches a black screen, or shows a GameGuard error code. These symptoms do not prove different causes, but the details can help narrow down troubleshooting.
- Write down the exact error code or capture the crash report.
- Record your Windows version and whether you have ever installed or used mods.
- Note how far the launch gets, including whether the GameGuard splash appears.
Arrowhead documented GameGuard false-positive launch failures in an older Known Issues post. That is evidence that GameGuard interference has occurred, not proof that it is responsible for every current crash. - Restart your PC. Then try launching the game again.

Arrowhead’s older post identified possible conflicts with antivirus, fan-cooling, and streaming-video overlay programs. It also mentioned disabling the Steam overlay and Steam Input among reported workarounds. This is a diagnostic lead, not a reason to turn off protection permanently or create broad antivirus exclusions. Reinstall GameGuard if the failure points to it
A Steam support thread reproduces instructions attributed to Arrowhead support for reinstalling GameGuard using tools in the game installation. Another volunteer reply describes a similar method, but a player reported that it did not fix their problem. Treat this as an option when the symptom points to GameGuard, not as a sure remedy. File names or locations may vary; check current official support guidance if the tools are missing or the steps do not match your installation. - In Steam, open the game’s installed files and locate its
toolsfolder. - Run
gguninstas administrator. - Run
GGSetupas administrator. - Launch the game and check whether the behavior changed.
Check Windows dependencies only if the basic steps fail
A July 2025 volunteer tech-support reply suggests checking that the Windows page file is enabled, updating drivers, and reinstalling Visual C++ packages. These are possible system checks, not evidence that a particular dependency caused your crash. Driver versions cited in older community posts may be out of date, so use current guidance from your hardware and software vendors rather than copying old version numbers.
