“An exception occurred” is a crash screen, not a diagnosis. The right next step depends on when it appears, whether it affects one game or the whole system, and what the screen says under “Processor,” “Exception type,” and “Current process.” Record those details and back up your data before changing files, saves, or system software.
First, record the error and identify its scope
Before restarting repeatedly or changing anything, photograph the full error screen. Note the processor, exception type, any fault status shown, and current process. Also write down the console model, system software version, Luma3DS version if shown, the title or menu involved, and exactly what you did just before the crash.

Then answer two questions: does the console reach the Home Menu, and does the error happen in one title or in several places? These distinctions matter because documented reports include an app-specific crash, a repeatable System Settings sequence, and intermittent crashes during gameplay—not one shared cause.
- Startup or boot: the console fails before reaching the Home Menu.
- One game or app: other titles and menus work normally.
- A repeatable menu sequence: the same steps reliably trigger the screen.
- Intermittent gameplay: the crash occurs during play, possibly after a particular action or recent change.
If the crash happens when opening one game or app
Start with that title’s data and any recent changes rather than treating the whole console as faulty. Preserve the save before attempting to restore, replace, or remove anything. A May 2019 report involved Animal Crossing: New Leaf on a New 3DS XL running system software 11.9.0-42E and Luma3DS 9.1. The reporter identified a corrupted garden file and said restoring a previous garden save resolved the problem. That is one user’s account; it does not establish that save corruption explains other crashes. Read the report.

Do not delete a save or replace title data unless you have a verified backup and know which data you are changing. If the error started after a patch, cheat, or other change, record that fact and investigate the change before trying unrelated system-wide repairs.
If the same system-menu sequence triggers it
Write down the exact sequence, including the menu you entered, the option selected, and how you exited. A June 2017 report on an Old 3DS with system version 11.4.0-37U and Luma3DS 8.0 described an exception after opening and leaving Nintendo DS Connections from the Internet Settings area, then closing System Settings. This historical report illustrates why a repeatable trigger is useful; it does not show that the same sequence is a general cause on current systems. Read the report.
When reporting the issue or seeking help, include the exact steps and the error-screen details. Avoid changing multiple settings at once: doing so can obscure which action matters and make the problem harder to reproduce.
If it crashes intermittently during gameplay
Keep a brief log of the title, what was happening immediately before the crash, how often it occurs, and any recent changes such as cheats or patches. In a report opened in December 2024, a user described an ARM11 (core 0) data abort during Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey on a New 2DS XL with system version 11.17.0-50U and Luma3DS v13.2.1. The user said crashes became more frequent while using a 60fps cheat, but also said they had happened before using it. This is a correlation in one report, not proof that the cheat caused the crashes. Read the report.

If a recent change appears connected, test only a change you can safely reverse, and preserve relevant data first. A crash that continues without that change should not be attributed to it solely because it was present during some failures.
If the error appears during startup or boot
First establish whether this is actually a boot failure: does the console stop before the Home Menu, or does the exception appear after the system has loaded? For a boot-specific problem, check whether the expected boot files are present and whether the SD card is readable. Copy the card’s contents to a computer before attempting repair.

A search-result excerpt from the Hacks Guide Wiki’s Luma3DS configuration page mentions a missing boot.firm, an unreadable SD card, or boot configuration as possible explanations for a particular startup condition. The page itself was not available for verification, so those are limited leads, not a complete diagnosis or a procedure for every model. Use current instructions matched to the exact console model, system version, and installed configuration. See the Luma3DS configuration guide.
The exception screen alone does not prove that the SD card has failed. Consider replacing a card only if testing indicates that it is defective or unreadable, and verify compatibility for your specific console model before choosing one.

What not to try as a universal fix
The available cases do not support a safe, one-size-fits-all reset or reinstall recipe. Do not treat any of these as automatic responses to the message:
- Deleting the Nintendo 3DS folder or formatting the SD card.
- Reinstalling every game or removing saves.
- Performing a CTR transfer or restoring NAND.
- Replacing the SD card without evidence that the card is faulty.
These actions can risk data or create new problems, and the error screen does not identify which—if any—is appropriate. Back up available saves and card contents, then match any recovery procedure to the model, system version, and installed configuration.
When to seek further help
If the console cannot boot, or the crash persists after a relevant check that matches your setup, seek help from a reputable 3DS repair or support resource. Provide the error-screen photograph, console model, software versions, affected title, and the steps that trigger the crash. The reports described here do not establish that a persistent exception means hardware failure.

The reports cited here are individual cases dated 2017, 2019, and 2024. They demonstrate why symptoms and context matter, but do not establish how common the error is or a universal cause or fix.
