A March 2026 report describes a hardware-based jailbreak demonstration on the original 2013 Xbox One, but it does not establish a simple, released procedure that owners can follow. It also does not show that the Xbox One S or Xbox One X is affected. If your goal is to develop or test apps on a retail console, Microsoft’s supported option is Developer Mode—not a full console jailbreak.
What the reported Xbox One jailbreak means
Windows Central and Tom’s Hardware reported on March 15, 2026, that researchers demonstrated a hardware attack involving the original Xbox One’s startup process. Tom’s Hardware attributes the “Bliss” technique to researcher Markus Gaasedelen. The reports describe a research demonstration, not a consumer-supported feature or a verified, accessible procedure for owners.

The coverage is specifically about the original 2013 Xbox One. The reports do not establish that the Xbox One S or Xbox One X is vulnerable, and the available accounts do not establish that a reproducible method or consumer tool has been released. For that reason, there is no reliable step-by-step jailbreak process to provide.
How the report compares with Developer Mode
| Question | Reported jailbreak | Microsoft Developer Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Hardware research demonstration reported March 15, 2026; no supported consumer procedure is established. (Windows Central; Tom’s Hardware) | Microsoft-documented development and testing feature for retail Xbox One consoles. (Microsoft agreement) |
| Model scope | Original 2013 Xbox One, according to the reports; Xbox One S and Xbox One X coverage is not established. (Windows Central; Tom’s Hardware) | Microsoft documentation describes retail Xbox One consoles; it does not present Developer Mode as a jailbreak. (Microsoft agreement) |
| What it is for | Research into modifying the console’s early boot security; not shown to be a routine owner modification. (Tom’s Hardware) | Developing, testing, and demonstrating applications. Microsoft’s agreement says a retail console may be activated “as a console to test development of applications for the Xbox One (a "Devkit") including demonstrating your applications.” (Microsoft agreement) |
| Returning to normal retail use | Not established by the reports as a supported workflow. | Microsoft says users can leave Developer Mode and return to Retail Mode; the retail home experience is restored through the Leave developer mode control. (Microsoft UWP FAQ) |
Use Developer Mode for app development
Microsoft’s Developer Mode agreement is for developing and demonstrating applications, not unlocking the full console or bypassing retail restrictions. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ says Developer Mode opens Dev Home, while Retail Mode presents the ordinary retail home experience. The FAQ also explains that publishing apps requires Microsoft’s developer processes and additional Xbox review.

Policy and legal considerations
Microsoft’s Digital Safety policy applies to its consumer online products and services, including Xbox, and prohibits unauthorized access and attempts to bypass or circumvent access to or use of services. That is Microsoft’s service policy; it is not, by itself, a complete legal ruling on modifying a console you own. Consequences can depend on jurisdiction, online activity, copyright, and other facts.
