To invite someone to a Minecraft world directly, both players must use the same edition. In Bedrock Edition, open your world, choose Invite to Game, select your friend, and send the invitation. Your friend can then join from Play > Friends while you are online in the world. Java and Bedrock players cannot join one another’s hosted games.

First, check that you’re using the same edition

Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition have separate hosted multiplayer. You and your friend need to launch the same edition: a Java player joins a Java-hosted game, and a Bedrock player joins a Bedrock-hosted game. For the current multiplayer requirements, see Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.

Invite a friend to a Bedrock world

  1. Start Minecraft and load the world you want to share, or create a new one.
  2. Open the in-game menu and select Invite to Game.
  3. Choose your friend from the list, then select Send invites.
  4. If your friend does not appear, select Add Friend, search for their gamertag, and return to the invite list.

These are the host-side steps in Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer guide. Menu placement and wording can vary by platform or game update.

Join a friend’s open Bedrock world

The host must have the world open, and both players need to be online and Minecraft friends. On the joining player’s device, open Minecraft, select Play, then open the Friends tab. Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s gamertag. Minecraft explains this flow in its guide to joining a friend’s Bedrock world online.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Why can’t my friend join?

  • Wrong edition: Confirm that both players are running Java or both are running Bedrock. They cannot join one another’s hosted games across editions.
  • Friend list or online status: For a direct Bedrock world, add each other as Minecraft friends and make sure both are online while the host’s world is open.
  • Account or permissions: Console and mobile players may need to sign in to or link a Microsoft account. Child accounts may need multiplayer permissions enabled.
  • Different game versions: Update both games to the current release; mismatched versions can prevent a connection.
  • Console online service: Console multiplayer may require the platform’s online subscription. Minecraft lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online among the applicable services; check the current requirements for your platform.
  • Network connection: Online multiplayer needs internet connectivity. A LAN game requires both devices to be on the same local network.

For account, version, platform-service, and connection requirements, consult Minecraft’s requirements page.

Use a Realm if friends should be able to play while you’re away

A direct world is available to friends while its host is playing. A Realm is an optional persistent-world service that lets invited friends access the active world even when its owner is offline. Realms cross-play is within an edition: Java players use Java Realms, and Bedrock players use Bedrock Realms. See Minecraft Realms for service details.

Share a Bedrock Realm link

  1. Open Play.
  2. Select Edit beside the Realm.
  3. Choose Members, then Share Link.

Anyone with the link can join the Realm, so do not post it publicly. Minecraft states this directly in its Realm share-link instructions.
