For a digital Xbox game or app bought from Microsoft, sign in to Xbox Support’s refund flow, select the purchase, choose Request a refund, explain why, and submit. For an Xbox subscription, use Microsoft’s cancellation flow to check whether it qualifies for a refund—but cancelling does not guarantee one. The seller matters: subscriptions bought through Apple or Google must be handled through those stores.
How do I get a refund for a digital Xbox game or app?
- Sign in to Microsoft Support’s refund guidance using the Microsoft account that made the purchase, then follow its link to Xbox Support’s digital-game refund flow.
- Select the game or app, choose Request a refund, give the reason for the request, and submit it.
- Check the request status in Xbox order history.
Microsoft says processing a request may take up to 72 hours. That is an estimate for processing the request, not a promise that it will be approved or that the money will already appear in your account. Xbox Support’s live refund flow is the place to check the criteria that apply to your purchase.
What can affect a game or app return?
- Microsoft says online returns are unavailable in some markets. If you cannot request a return online, its support guidance directs you to Sales support.
- A single item from a bundle cannot be returned, according to Microsoft’s return guidance.
- Microsoft does not accept returns for purchases made from another retailer. Contact the seller that processed the transaction.
- The detailed Xbox-specific eligibility thresholds are not established in the cited Microsoft guidance available here. Do not assume a universal purchase-age or play-time limit; review the live Xbox flow and consider any consumer rights that apply where you live.
How do I cancel Xbox Game Pass and check for a refund?
For a subscription bought directly from Microsoft, open Microsoft’s subscription cancellation and refund guidance and follow the cancellation steps for your account. Microsoft says cancellation is how you check refund eligibility, but “Not all cancellations will result in a refund.” Turning off renewal stops future automatic billing; it does not itself establish that a payment will be refunded.
If the account shows Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to expire rather than renew automatically. Microsoft says you can continue using it until its expiry date. Do not turn recurring billing back on if your goal is to prevent another renewal.

Subscription refund rules vary by product, timing, and country. Microsoft’s general subscription policy describes possible refunds for certain subscriptions within 30 days of initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever is sooner, and a possible one-time refund of the most recent recurring charge when cancelled within 30 days of payment. Those are general Microsoft subscription terms, not confirmed Xbox-specific terms: Microsoft directs Xbox subscribers to its separate Xbox subscription cancellations and refunds page for the applicable rules.
If you bought the subscription through another store
Use the store that sold it. Microsoft directs customers with Apple-billed subscriptions to Apple and Google-billed subscriptions to Google for cancellation or refund support; Microsoft cannot process a return for a purchase made through another retailer. For prepaid subscription codes bought at retail, the retailer’s return policy applies.

How long does an Xbox refund take?
Microsoft’s support guidance gives two separate timing estimates: it may take up to 72 hours to process a refund request, and an issued refund generally takes 3–5 business days to be applied to the original payment option. After Microsoft issues it, your bank or payment provider may take a few more days to post the funds. These are estimates for different stages, not one guaranteed end-to-end timeline.
Where can I check my Xbox refund status?
For a game or app refund, check Xbox order history with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Allow for the separate payment-provider posting time after a refund has been issued.

What if I do not recognize the Xbox charge?
Investigate it through Microsoft’s Manage your payments page and the account’s order history. An unfamiliar charge should be checked rather than assumed refundable; the support guidance does not say that every unrecognized charge qualifies for a refund.
Microsoft’s return information does not affect remedies available under Australian consumer law, and consumer rights may also vary elsewhere. This is not a country-by-country legal guide; consult the rules that apply in your location if the store’s decision does not resolve the issue.
