You can build a convincing mirror-shaped wall decoration in any edition with ordinary blocks, but it will not show a live reflection. For reflective material shading, Microsoft documents a separate resource-pack method for Bedrock Edition; it requires compatible graphics support and still cannot create a conventional first-person mirror.
Which kind of Minecraft mirror do you want?

Build a simple decorative mirror
- Choose a flat wall and mark out a narrow, centered panel.
- Make a frame that contrasts with the wall. Iron blocks can suggest metal; darker blocks or dark glass can make the inset read as reflective.
- Keep the inset flat, and add a small ledge or nearby lighting if it suits the room.
These are visual building suggestions, not blocks with actual reflective behavior. Treat the result as decoration rather than a surface that displays the player or the room.
Create a reflective-looking material in Bedrock Edition
Microsoft’s PBR texture tutorial demonstrates a mirror-like material using the vanilla iron block as its example. This is a resource-pack workflow, not a setting you can turn on for an ordinary block. The reflection documentation describes the rendering limits.
Prepare the texture set
- Create a Bedrock resource pack and place the custom textures in its texture directory.
- For the iron-block example, use a texture-set JSON file named
iron_block.texture_set.jsonthat points to the color textureiron_blockand the MER textureiron_block_mer. - Make the roughness channel solid black for a roughness value of 0.0, which produces a very smooth surface. Make the metalness channel solid white for a value of 1.0, representing fully metallic material.
- Set the pack manifest capability to
pbrorraytracedfor the corresponding Vibrant Visuals or ray-traced rendering setup, then test it on compatible hardware.
For the full file requirements and activation steps, follow Microsoft’s Bedrock resource-pack tutorial. Activate the pack for the world and check its stacking order if your texture does not appear: a pack applied later can override a texture from an earlier pack.

Know what the reflection can show
The documented effect uses screen-space reflections (SSR), so it is not a full room or player reflection. First-person mirrors and objects outside the screen cannot appear in the reflection. Transparent geometry such as glass does not receive SSR, except water. Microsoft also states that SSR starts to fade above roughness 0.3 and is not applied at roughness 0.4 or higher.
Does this method work in Java Edition?
The texture-set and SSR workflow described here is for Bedrock Edition. The cited documentation does not establish Java shader instructions or version compatibility, so do not apply these steps to Java without checking guidance for the specific shader or mod you plan to use.

Do you need command blocks or modeling software?
No command block is needed for either a static decorative panel or the resource-pack material workflow. Microsoft’s Bedrock command-block tutorial covers automatically running commands with redstone power and uses a cheats-enabled world; it is unrelated to making a basic mirror.
For custom model work, Minecraft’s creator tools page lists Blockbench, a free, open-source modeling tool available on the web and as an app for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports Bedrock and Java workflows and is provided by third-party contributors, not Mojang or Microsoft. It is optional, not a requirement for the framed build.
