To make a Roblox tycoon game, build one complete loop first: a player claims a plot, earns in-game currency, spends it on a visible upgrade, and sees the tycoon grow. Use Roblox Studio to build the place and Luau scripts to run it. Keep purchase and currency decisions on the server, add saving only after the loop works, and expand the game gradually.
What you need to make a Roblox tycoon
Roblox Studio is the creation environment, and Roblox scripts use Luau. Roblox describes Luau as “derived from Lua 5.1.” If you are new to coding, start with the Roblox Creator Hub core curriculum; it includes project setup and gameplay scripting foundations. You can also use Roblox’s guided tutorials, which offer project-based lessons for different experience levels.
The official learning material teaches general Studio and scripting skills rather than prescribing a tycoon recipe. The sequence below is a practical way to apply those skills to a small, playable tycoon.
Build the first earning-and-upgrade loop
1. Start with a small, readable plot
In Studio, make one simple plot with a base, a place for an earning machine, and a visible spot where the player can buy an upgrade. Use basic shapes first. At this stage, the goal is to make the game flow understandable, not to finish the art.

2. Decide how the player earns and spends
Choose one clear way for the player to earn currency, such as a machine that produces income, and one upgrade that costs currency. Give the upgrade an obvious effect: it might add a machine, increase production, or open another part of the plot. Keep the first price, reward, and effect easy to adjust while tuning the loop.
3. Make the upgrade visible
Show the purchase interaction where players can see it, and make the result of buying it easy to recognize. A currency display and straightforward feedback can help players understand whether they can afford the upgrade and what changed after purchase.

4. Play through the loop before adding more
Check that a player can claim the plot, earn currency, afford the upgrade, buy it, and see the result. If any step is confusing or does not work, fix that before adding more buttons, plots, or upgrade branches.
Script currency and purchases on the server
Use Luau scripts for game logic. The client can display buttons and feedback, but should not be trusted to decide a player’s balance or grant an upgrade. When a player attempts a purchase, have server-side logic verify the relevant conditions before changing the game state.

- Confirm that the player owns or is using the plot where the purchase is offered.
- Check that the player has enough currency.
- Check that the upgrade is available to that player and has not already been purchased, if it is a one-time upgrade.
- Only after those checks pass, subtract the cost and apply the upgrade on the server.
These are implementation recommendations for a tycoon’s purchase flow. Roblox’s scripting documentation and core curriculum cover scripting and client-server concepts that underpin this approach.
Add saving after the core loop works
Use DataStoreService for progress that should persist between sessions, such as currency and purchased upgrades. Roblox documents that data stores are accessed by the server through Scripts. Saving adds failure cases that a purely in-session prototype does not have, so do not treat a failed save as successful.

Studio API access is disabled by default. When enabling it for testing, be careful: Studio can access the same data stores as the live experience. Follow Roblox’s save player data tutorial and test against a separate version so experiments do not overwrite live player data.

Once the basic loop is reliable, improve the presentation and add content that strengthens progression. For example, TweenService can interpolate properties for a transition or purchase effect. Add more plots, upgrade branches, interface elements, or animations only when they make the game easier to understand or more satisfying to play.

Monetization is optional
You can publish a tycoon without adding paid items. If you choose to monetize, Roblox distinguishes between passes and developer products:
