You can’t craft a bell in standard Minecraft gameplay. The most direct way to get one is to find a village and mine its bell; you can also buy one from certain blacksmith villagers or, rarely, find one in a Ruined Portal chest.
Can you craft a bell in Minecraft?
No. Bells have no standard crafting recipe. Minecraft says bells generate naturally in all village variants, usually near the settlement’s middle (Minecraft: Taking Inventory: Bell).
How to get a bell
Find and mine a village bell
- Find a village. Bells generate in all village variants and are usually near the center or meeting point.
- Break the bell by hand or with any tool. A pickaxe breaks it fastest, but no special tool is required.
- Collect the dropped bell.
Buy one from a blacksmith villager
Some blacksmith villagers sell a bell for 36 emeralds. The eligible profession and villager level differ between Java and Bedrock Edition, and some trades are chance-based. Check the trade list for your edition before relying on this route:

Check a Ruined Portal chest
A bell has a 1.5% chance to appear in a Ruined Portal chest in both Java and Bedrock Edition, according to the Minecraft Wiki bell reference. Treat this as a lucky find, not a dependable way to get one.
