The update became available May 20, 2026, replacing the former Legacy Paths system with optional Triumphs. The official description establishes that broad objective, but does not publish a settlement count, score threshold, or required military sequence.
What counts as a Military Victory now?
2K’s May 20, 2026 Test of Time announcement describes the Military Victory objective as “controlling and conquering Settlements.” It says the victory system was reworked for the full game and that Legacy Paths were replaced by Triumphs, optional challenging objectives associated with six attributes, including Militaristic.
The announcement does not specify how many Settlements you must control or conquer, how progress is scored, or which actions are mandatory. So the reliable starting point is the current in-game Victory interface: use it to check your live progress and requirements rather than relying on an older guide’s numbers.
How to pursue the objective in a current game
The official description supports a settlement-focused approach, not a precise tactical recipe. Keep the distinction clear: capturing territory is relevant to the stated objective, but the announcement does not establish that any particular settlement count, unit mix, or timetable guarantees the victory.

- Check the current Victory interface. Read the Military Victory progress and any displayed requirements in your game. Treat those live details as authoritative over pre-update walkthroughs.
- Build toward settlement control. Plan military actions around taking and holding Settlements, the actions named in the current official description.
- Recheck progress as the game develops. The update describes victories as rewarding dominance throughout the game, but does not publish a military-specific scoring formula or fixed age-by-age sequence.
This is as specific as the available official rules support. Any guide claiming a universal number of Settlements, points, or required units should be checked against the current game version before you follow it.
Why older Military Victory guides may not apply
Before Test of Time, Civilization VII used Legacy Paths. A June 23, 2025 support article explains that, in that earlier single-player configuration, disabling every Legacy Path and Score Victory still left a Domination Victory available by eliminating all other leaders. It also discusses Modern Age Nuclear Fission and the Military Legacy Path. Those are historical rules details, not stated requirements for the current Military Victory.

Firaxis’s pre-release Test of Time overview on Steam described the intended direction: progress toward victories could begin in Antiquity, and an exceptionally dominant player might win as early as Exploration. Treat that as design context, not a guarantee of a particular timing or a substitute for the released rules.

- Established: Test of Time was available May 20, 2026, and replaced Legacy Paths with Triumphs.
- Established: The current high-level Military Victory description centers on controlling and conquering Settlements.
- Not established in the cited current announcement: a required number of Settlements, a points threshold, scoring weights, mandatory actions, or a complete tactical walkthrough.
- Historical only: the June 2025 elimination-based Domination Victory rule applied to the earlier system configuration and should not be presented as the current Military Victory condition.
