Use a Fast TM to change a Pokémon’s Fast Attack or a Charged TM to change its Charged Attack. Regular TMs choose randomly from that Pokémon’s available moves of the matching type; an Elite TM lets you pick a move from its eligible list, including some attacks previously available during events.

How do you change a Pokémon’s moveset with a TM?

  1. Open your item bag and use the TM that matches the move slot you want to change: Fast TM for a Fast Attack, or Charged TM for a Charged Attack.
  2. Select the Pokémon when prompted and confirm the change. A regular TM assigns a move at random from that Pokémon’s available attacks in that category.

If you want a particular move and do not want to rely on a random result, use an Elite TM instead. Its eligible move choices appear in the selection list.

What is the difference between a regular TM and an Elite TM?

Item What it changes How the move is chosen
Fast TM Fast Attack Randomly selects from the Pokémon’s available Fast Attacks.
Charged TM Charged Attack Randomly selects from the Pokémon’s available Charged Attacks.
Elite Fast TM Fast Attack Lets you choose from the eligible Fast Attacks, including some event-available attacks.
Elite Charged TM Charged Attack Lets you choose from the eligible Charged Attacks, including some event-available attacks.

An Elite TM does not guarantee access to every move that has ever existed: the Pokémon’s eligible options determine what you can select, and that list can change.

How do you use an Elite TM?

  1. Open your item bag and select the Elite Fast TM or Elite Charged TM.
  2. Choose the Pokémon whose move you want to change.
  3. Select the desired move from the available list.
  4. Tap Teach Attack to confirm.

If the Pokémon already knows two Charged Attacks, choose which existing Charged Attack to forget before teaching the selected move.

Where can you get TMs in Pokémon Go?

Regular TMs

Niantic’s item guidance lists exploring, spinning Photo Discs at PokéStops and Gyms, and completing Special Research tasks among the ways to collect items. It does not establish one permanent, TM-specific source for regular TMs, so check the rewards currently offered in the game.

Elite TMs

Niantic describes Elite Fast and Elite Charged TMs as rare, limited-time items. Possible sources include Shop offers during special events, such as Community Days, and end-of-season GO Battle League rewards for players who reach a high rank. These are possibilities, not guaranteed current offers: check the in-game rewards and official announcements for the active event or season rather than assuming a particular rank or offer applies.

How should you choose which move to teach?

First decide which battle format and role the Pokémon is meant for. A Charged Attack that is ready more often may suit a different job from a stronger attack that takes longer to prepare. Energy requirements can also differ between Gym and Raid battles and Trainer Battles, so a move recommendation is not automatically universal across formats.

  • Use a regular TM when the move you want is in the Pokémon’s ordinary move pool and a random result is acceptable.
  • Use an Elite TM when you need to choose a specific eligible move, particularly an event-available attack.
  • Before spending an Elite TM, confirm that the desired move appears in the Pokémon’s current selectable list.

Does a TM unlock a second Charged Attack?

No. A TM replaces a move in an existing slot. To add a second Charged Attack, use the option on the Pokémon’s summary page and pay the required Stardust and Candy; that is a separate feature, not a TM use.
