“Ghost block” can mean two different things in Minecraft: a deliberate floating block effect you can walk through, or a glitch where a mined or placed block appears to remain. The first is a Java command technique; the second depends on the edition, version and trigger. Choose the matching section below.
Create a floating ghost block in Java
A decorative ghost block can be made by summoning a falling_block entity and giving it the NoGravity tag. It looks like a block and floats, but players can pass through it because it is an entity rather than a normal solid block. The Minecraft Wiki documents this approach in its falling-block tutorial.

The tutorial’s method is Java command-oriented. Command syntax can vary by release, and the available sources do not establish a current compatibility matrix for Java versions or Bedrock. Check the syntax for your specific Java version before running a command, and make sure you have permission to use commands in that world or server.
Keep the effect from disappearing
The summoned entity has a finite lifetime. To keep it around, the tutorial describes using a command-block clock, a repeating command block, or resetting the entity’s Time NBT value. These approaches require command access and the right command syntax for your version; they do not turn the entity into a normal block with collision.

Troubleshoot a ghost block that appears by mistake
If a block looks as though it remains after mining or placement, treat it as a symptom—not as an item you need to obtain. The right next step depends on what you were doing and which Minecraft edition and version you are using.
Java: ghost block after instant mining
Mojang’s report MC-244981 describes ghost blocks after instant mining in Java 1.18. For that reported case, breaking or placing a block at the affected position, or changing an adjacent block, can update the position so the block reappears and behaves normally. The report is a duplicate of MC-172550 and gives no fix version for MC-244981, so this is a scoped workaround, not a guaranteed fix for every Java ghost block.
Bedrock: ghost block when placing while opening a container
A separate Bedrock report, MCPE-234423, concerns a ghost block triggered by uncrouching and placing a block while opening a container’s interface. It lists version 26.40, including preview 26.40.20, as the fix version and was marked resolved on 2026-08-04. That status applies to the reported trigger; it does not establish a fix for other Bedrock ghost-block symptoms.
Check whether an add-on is involved
If the problem appears in a world using add-ons, Minecraft Help recommends updating the game and testing the add-on in a new world. Reordering packs may also help when pack interactions are suspected. Follow the steps in Troubleshoot Add-On Issues in Minecraft. An add-on conflict is one possibility to test, not a proven cause of every ghost block.

What to include when asking for help
If the block returns or the workaround does not apply, note the details that can distinguish one issue from another:
- Edition and exact game version, including whether it is a preview or snapshot.
- Whether you are playing in a single-player world or on a server.
- The action immediately before the block appeared, such as instant mining, placing a block, opening a container, or using an add-on.
- Whether updating the position or testing without add-ons changes the behavior.
Those details matter because a Java mining report and a Bedrock container-placement report describe different situations, and neither establishes a universal fix across editions, versions, servers and mods.
