For most setups, download Fabric’s Executable Server (.jar), place it in a dedicated server folder, and run the command generated for your selected Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions. Use the manual installer instead if you need its generated server files or your host panel requires that setup.
Choose the Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions first
Fabric is for Minecraft: Java Edition. Before downloading anything, decide which Minecraft version the server will run and which Fabric Loader version to use with it. The official Fabric server download page lets you select both and generates a launcher filename and command for those selections. Its contents can change as releases advance: on October 8, 2026, the page’s search result showed Minecraft 26.3, Loader 0.19.5, and launcher 1.1.2. Treat those as a dated example, not as versions to copy; use the live page’s generated command for your own selections.
Fastest route: use the Executable Server JAR
The executable launcher is the simplest official route: Fabric describes it as a small launcher that starts a Fabric-enabled server using the versions selected on the download page, without needing the installer.
- Open the Fabric server download page and select the intended Minecraft and Fabric Loader versions.
- Choose Executable Server (.jar) and download the file.
- Create or choose a dedicated server directory and put the downloaded JAR there. Keeping server files together makes it easier to manage configuration, mods, and backups.
- In that directory, run the launch command shown on the page. Copy the command that the page generated for your download; its filename and version arguments change. Do not assume an example such as
java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-mc.26.3-loader.0.19.5-launcher.1.1.2.jar noguiapplies to your file. - Follow the first-run prompts and review Minecraft’s EULA. The server must have the EULA accepted before you operate it; the Windows setup guide describes the EULA file being generated during startup.
If Java is reported missing or incompatible, check the Java version instructions for the Minecraft release you selected before trying again.

When to use the manual installer
Choose the manual route when you need the installer’s generated files, want to see or configure its server setup, or are following a host’s specific instructions. Fabric’s general installation guide explains that the generated fabric-server-launch.jar normally expects a vanilla server.jar in the same directory, unless you configure a different path in the generated properties file. Follow the installer’s output and instructions for the selected version.
- Download Fabric Installer from Fabric’s official page. The general guide also points to the manual or older-version download when needed.
- Open the installer and choose the Server tab.
- Select the Minecraft version, Loader version, and target directory.
- Install, then inspect the generated files and any instructions shown by the installer.
- Place the required vanilla
server.jarin the same directory asfabric-server-launch.jar, unless the generated configuration specifies another path. Start the server using the generated script or the instructions for that installation.
For an existing server upgrade, back up the world and configuration before changing files. Fabric’s general guide specifically warns that the .fabric folder may need to be removed if the installer did not remove it during an upgrade.

Use Java that matches the Minecraft version
Java requirements depend on the Minecraft version; do not carry guidance from an older release over to a newer one. The older Fabric Wiki headless guide, last modified in 2024, lists Java 17 for Minecraft 1.18.2–1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 or newer. Current Fabric Documentation pages for Minecraft 26.2 recommend Java 25. For a current release, follow the instructions for that Minecraft version rather than applying the older Java 21 advice. Check the installed runtime with java -version.
On Linux, use the appropriate headless Java runtime package for your distribution. Fabric’s current Linux Java guide gives Java 25 package examples for its Minecraft 26.2 documentation. On Windows, use a compatible Java installation and launch the command or script generated for your server. The Fabric Wiki’s Windows server tutorial shows the installer workflow, server JAR download, and generated startup scripts; follow the files and command for your selected release.

Install server mods carefully
Only add mods built for the server’s Minecraft and Fabric setup. Do not put client-only mods on the server: they may fail to load or prevent startup. Fabric’s server download page notes that most mods also require Fabric API, but dependencies vary, so check each mod’s own instructions and required version before adding it.

Fabric notes that its executable launcher can be used on a remote server or with Minecraft-specific host panels and startup scripts, but that does not establish support for every provider. Ask the provider whether its panel supports your exact Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, launcher arrangement, and required Java runtime. Fabric’s wiki does not endorse third-party tools listed there.
