To make players use R6 by default, open Avatar Settings in Roblox Studio and set the avatar type to R6. If you only need an R6 character model in your workspace, use Rig Builder instead; that inserts a model but does not change the experience’s player-avatar setting.
Set the experience’s player avatars to R6
- Open your place in Roblox Studio.
- Open Avatar Settings from the File menu or the Avatar tab.
- In the window’s top bar, open the avatar type control and select R6. Avatar Settings also offers R15 and R15 & R6. Roblox’s Avatar Settings documentation describes this as the experience-level setting.
- Turn on the preview and inspect the avatar lineup.
- Start a Studio playtest and check the player character, animations, and game systems before publishing. Roblox recommends previewing and playtesting; issues can be harder to diagnose when a team or universe has multiple place files.
Insert an R6 model into the workspace instead
To add a rig for building, animation, or testing without changing the experience default, open Character from the Avatar or Home toolbar tab, then choose an R6 option in the Rig Builder popup. The rig appears in the 3D viewport and Explorer. Roblox’s Rig Generator documentation also describes options for inserting an R15 rig or a rig based on your account avatar.
Layerable clothing and other layerable accessories can only be equipped to R15 models, according to Roblox’s Rig Generator documentation. Keep that limitation in mind when creating a rig for a demonstration or test asset.
Choose the right avatar setting
Roblox’s GameAvatarType reference lists R6, R15, and PlayerChoice. PlayerChoice uses each player’s character settings to determine whether their character uses R6 or R15. Choose R6 when the experience should use that rig as its default; use PlayerChoice when the player’s setting should determine the rig.

The HumanoidRigType reference identifies a character’s rig type as R6 or R15. Avatar Settings controls the experience’s avatar type, while Rig Builder creates a specific model in the place; they serve different purposes.
Do not confuse the setting with the R6 to R15 Adapter
The R6 to R15 Adapter is for letting R15 avatars join a game with R6 avatar characters enabled. Its documented setup requires including R6 in Avatar Settings and setting Workspace.AvatarUnificationMode to Enabled. It is not the ordinary way to switch the experience default to R6.

Roblox documents compatibility limitations involving custom character systems, rig-specific behavior, body-part resizing, and character-part lookups. Test affected scripts and gameplay before relying on the adapter.
