1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with one small arena and one attack. Make the server—not the player’s device—the authority that checks attacks and applies damage. Then build outward: add rounds, respawns, score, UI, and more moves only after the basic combat loop works.
Plan a small, playable first version
Decide whether the first build is free-for-all or team-based, how players join a round, what ends the round, and where players respawn. Limit the prototype to one arena and one attack. That makes it easier to tell whether a problem comes from combat, round logic, or the map.
Block out the arena with simple geometry and clear sightlines. Shape it around the first attack’s range and the movement you want; save decorative details until players can read the action and understand where they can move.
Roblox’s gameplay scripting curriculum is a useful guide to related building blocks: teams, spawning and respawning, rounds, blasters, hit detection, and damage. It is a learning path, not a ready-made melee battlegrounds game.

Choose the first kind of attack
| Attack type | Good starting point | Design questions |
|---|---|---|
| Ranged | Use the official laser hit-detection tutorial as an adjacent example. | How should range and projectile feel work? How will the server verify the shot? |
| Melee | Use a server-checked region or hitbox associated with the attack; the exact implementation depends on the move. | How will the hitbox line up with the animation? Can the server reject hits that are too far away or otherwise impossible? |
For either type, aim for attacks that feel responsive while making hits and misses easy to understand. Roblox’s ranged example does not prescribe a canonical melee hitbox, combo, stun, block, or ultimate system; those choices are part of your game’s design.
Separate player input from combat authority
Roblox uses a client-server model. The client can detect input and show immediate local presentation, but the server should own the game state and decide whether an attack is allowed. Roblox describes the server as “the ultimate authority for maintaining the game’s state” and responsible for keeping connected clients in sync. See Client-server runtime.

- Put a RemoteEvent where both sides can access it.
ReplicatedStorageis a common location. RemoteEvents support one-way client/server communication; see Remote events and callbacks. - Send an attack request from the client. The client calls
FireServer()when the player uses the move. Keep the request compact; treat anything the client sends as a claim, not proof. - Handle the request on the server. In the server’s
OnServerEventhandler, Roblox supplies the callingPlayeras the first argument. Use that identity rather than trusting a client-supplied attacker. - Validate the move and determine its result on the server. Only then update health, score, or other authoritative state. Do not accept a client-selected target and apply damage without checking it.
Detect hits and validate them before dealing damage
For a ranged attack
A raycast tests a line from an origin in a direction for a specified length. Roblox’s raycasting documentation explains the API and its behavior. The laser tutorial demonstrates client-side raycasting followed by server validation before damage. A client-reported hit is still only a claim: verify it before changing health.
One practical limitation is that client-side streaming can leave distant geometry unavailable to that client’s raycast. Do not assume a client has a complete view of all distant parts when relying on its hit report.

For a melee attack
Use a hit region or hitbox the server can check against the attacker, target, and move timing. The right shape and timing depend on the attack; a fast punch, sweeping strike, and lunging move need not use the same region. Keep the animation and hit window understandable to players, and make the server reject hits that do not fit the move’s allowed reach or state.
Apply server-side checks
Before damage, validate that the attacker is alive and able to attack, the move is off cooldown, the target is an alive valid opponent, and the hit is in plausible range. Check that static obstructions do not make the hit impossible. Track cooldowns and attack state on the server rather than relying on client timing.

- Track eliminations or team score and decide what ends a round.
- Handle spawning, respawning, and what happens to a player when a round ends.
- Show players the information they need, such as health, score, round state, and move availability.
- Add animations, sounds, and other feedback so an attack’s wind-up, hit, and miss are legible.
Use the curriculum’s round and player-lifecycle examples as patterns, then adapt them to your own rules rather than treating them as a complete battlegrounds template.
Test multiplayer and hostile requests
Test with multiple players in Studio, including situations that a normal successful attack does not cover. Roblox warns that clients can send arbitrary remote arguments, so test the server’s decisions, not just the visible effects.
- Attack while dead, during a respawn, or while another action should prevent attacking.
- Send repeated requests to check that server cooldowns hold.
- Try targets that are invalid, on the same team, out of range, or behind a wall.
- Test misses, respawns, and latency, and confirm that health and score remain consistent for all players.
Roblox’s Detect hits lesson offers another curriculum reference for hit detection. The Weapons kit is a Studio resource that may help prototype projectile weapons, but it is not a battlegrounds melee system; check its asset terms before using it.
