Which Hunter spec is best for PvE in Season of Discovery?
For ranged PvE in the Phase 8 recommendations, Wowhead favors deep Marksmanship with Trueshot Aura. The guide calls Trueshot Aura an essential talent and a required raid buff. It says Survival is outclassed with best-in-slot gear, though the gap is small when Trueshot Aura is active. These are guide-author recommendations, not an official Blizzard damage ranking. Wowhead’s Phase 8 ranged overview was updated May 2, 2025.
There is no single best Hunter setup for every player or encounter. Melee Hunter is a distinct rune-enabled damage style, not merely a ranged build with a different weapon. The choice depends on the range and movement an encounter allows, whether you value single-target damage or need AoE and cleave, your comfort with each style, and the weapons and set bonuses available to your character. The cited guides do not establish a universal quantitative damage ranking between ranged and melee.
Choose ranged for distance and a simpler execution
The Phase 8 ranged guide describes the rotation as fairly simple and says a stationary “turret” approach performs fine. Ranged Hunters can weave in and out of melee, but that is a more difficult execution choice, not a requirement for viable ranged DPS.

Choose melee for a different rune-driven playstyle
Icy Veins’ melee Hunter guide highlights single-target damage potential, soloing, and utility. It also identifies weaker AoE and cleave, and weaker scaling than other melee classes, as limitations. Consider the actual encounter and your weapon options rather than assuming melee is always ahead or behind ranged.
Which ranged Hunter runes should you use?
Wowhead’s Phase 8 rune reference recommends Expose Weakness for the waist and Trap Launcher for the boots on ranged Hunter. Trap Launcher allows traps to contribute extra damage during fights. These are recommendations from a phase-specific guide, not permanent class rules. Check Wowhead’s rune reference alongside your current phase and character setup; it was updated June 16, 2026, and cautions that some specialization details may have changed since earlier specialist-guide updates.

The ranged overview also recommends obtaining Treatise on the Heart of the Lion and Treatise on Aspect of the Viper from a Rune Broker, and calls Strings of Fate the go-to Phase 8 ranged bow. These are in-game recommendations; verify that the items and their status still apply in your version of the game before planning around them.
Which melee Hunter runes fit each weapon style?
Do not combine the rune recommendations into one universal melee setup. Wowhead’s Phase 8 reference makes the weapon distinction explicit:

Use the list as phase-specific guide advice, and confirm rune effects and tuning in your current game. Blizzard’s Phase 2 announcement historically described Melee Specialist as reducing Raptor Strike’s cooldown, making it instant, sometimes avoiding its cooldown, and removing Mongoose Bite’s cooldown. It also described Trap Launcher as enabling trap placement within 40 yards and during combat. That announcement dates to 2024 and explains historical mechanics; it is not evidence of the current Phase 8 rotation or tuning.
What stats should ranged Hunters prioritize?
Wowhead’s listed ranged priority is:
- Hit Rating
- Agility
- Attack Power
- Critical Strike
The guide places Hit first because missed abilities reduce damage. It notes that one point of Agility gives a Hunter two ranged attack power and one melee attack power, while also adding critical strike rating. Use this order as a starting point for ranged gearing, not as a universal ranking of every item: phase, encounter, and the gear you already have can affect a specific choice.

Do ranged Hunters need a pet for PvE DPS?
The cited materials do not establish a freshly verified Phase 8 pet choice or a universal rule that ranged Hunters need one for optimal DPS. Pet recommendations are particularly sensitive to tuning, and the specialist guides describe them as historically subject to change. Check a current, phase-specific guide before choosing or gearing around a pet; do not treat an older recommendation as a guaranteed live-game answer.

Alongside damage, Wowhead notes that ranged Hunters contribute raid buffs and debuffs. It identifies Engineering as useful and says Obsidian Bomb can boost damage against trash and bosses. These are in-game benefits, not a reason to purchase anything outside the game.

How current are these recommendations?
The Phase 8 ranged overview was updated May 2, 2025, while the Icy Veins Marksmanship and melee guides were reviewed for Phase 8 on April 10, 2025. Wowhead’s rune reference is newer—updated June 16, 2026—but warns that some specialization information may have changed since specialist-guide updates. Blizzard’s Phase 2 announcement is older historical context, not current balance evidence. Because the recommendations span different update dates, confirm relevant tuning and item availability in game before committing to an exact build.
