Fishing reaches level 10 at 15,000 cumulative Fishing XP. The most direct route is to catch fish consistently, prioritizing difficult fish, higher-quality catches, and perfect catches for more XP. Crab pots and two in-game books also add Fishing XP, while food buffs only raise your skill temporarily.
How much XP does Fishing level 10 require?
Level 10 requires 15,000 total Fishing XP. Since level 9 begins at 10,000 XP, the final level takes another 5,000 XP. These are cumulative thresholds, not amounts you need to earn separately at each level.

Which activities give Fishing XP?
Catch fish with a rod
Rod catches award XP based on the fish’s difficulty and quality. The formula is XP = ((Fish Quality + 1) × 3) + (Fish Difficulty ÷ 3). Quality values are 0 for normal, 1 for silver, 2 for gold, and 4 for iridium. For example, a normal sardine with difficulty 30 is worth 13 XP before any applicable multiplier.
A perfect catch multiplies the catch’s XP by 2.4. Catching a treasure chest multiplies it by 2.2, and catching a Legendary fish multiplies it by 5. These are multipliers applied to catch XP, not flat bonuses. A non-fish item caught on a rod gives 3 XP.

Harvest crab pots
Each crab-pot harvest gives 5 XP regardless of what is inside. This is steady, predictable progress, but it is less XP per action than a successful rod catch can provide. Bait unlocks at Fishing level 2 and crab pots at level 3 in the standard progression; a Crab Pot Bundle reward can provide pots earlier. You still need to return and harvest them.
Read Fishing XP books
Bait And Bobber and Book Of Stars each grant 250 Fishing XP when read. They are in-game books, so use them when you obtain them as a supplement to your other fishing rather than relying on them as the main route to level 10. Book XP: Stardew Valley Wiki: Fisher.
What is a practical route to level 10?
If you are happy to fish actively
- Spend fishing time where you can regularly land fish; a failed cast or lost fish does not advance you like a successful catch.
- Favor opportunities to catch more difficult fish and improve catch quality, since both contribute to the XP formula.
- Keep the fish inside the bobber bar for a perfect catch when possible. The 2.4× XP multiplier makes a perfect catch particularly valuable.
- Read either Fishing XP book when it becomes available, and collect treasure chests when you can do so without losing the fish.
There is no single universally best spot established by these mechanics: available fish vary with season, weather, water, and time. Choose a location and time that let you land fish reliably rather than chasing a fish that is unavailable or beyond your current skill.

If you prefer lower-effort progress
Set crab pots, bait them, and collect their contents regularly. Each collection gives 5 XP, regardless of the catch. Pots are a reliable supplement, but they require unlocking or obtaining the equipment and returning to harvest it; they are not a complete early-game shortcut.
If your goal is a particular fish
Leveling and catching a specific seasonal or Legendary fish are related but distinct goals. A temporary Fishing food buff can make the minigame easier while you pursue that fish, but the buff does not count as permanent XP toward level 10. For general leveling, prioritize repeatable XP instead of pursuing a target fish solely for its name or rarity.

When does level 10 take effect?
Your Fishing level increases as soon as you earn enough XP to cross the threshold. The level-up popup appears after you sleep, and recipe or profession benefits from the increase become available the following day. A food buff can temporarily raise the displayed Fishing skill and help with catches, but it does not replace the 15,000 cumulative XP needed for permanent level 10.
Each Fishing level adds rod proficiency, increases minimum fish size and bobber-bar height, and reduces the maximum wait for a bite by 0.25 seconds. Level 1 also increases casting distance by one tile; level 2 unlocks bait; level 3 unlocks crab pots and the Dish O’ The Sea recipe; and levels 5 and 10 offer profession choices.
