During the event, players qualified by moving a Pokémon between Pokémon HOME and Pokémon Sword or Shield, then claimed the gift in the mobile HOME app. The Zeraora in Max Raid Battles was not catchable; defeating it helped unlock the separate gift.
Can you still get Shiny Zeraora?
No, not through the original official event. The Pokémon Company’s US event announcement set the claim deadline at July 6, 2020, at 4:59 p.m. PDT, and the reviewed official notices show no later Shiny Zeraora offer for Sword or Shield. The old eligibility and claim steps cannot be used to claim the gift now. Pokémon’s event announcement and its distribution notice document the event.
Whether a legitimate player-to-player trade is currently available is not established by those official notices. Don’t treat trading as a confirmed way to obtain one based on this event information.
Why couldn’t you catch Zeraora in the raid?
The Max Raid Battle was a community challenge, not the method for catching the Shiny Zeraora. Zeraora could appear in raids with at least three stars, including especially powerful Shiny Zeraora in five-star raids, but players could not throw Poké Balls at it. Defeats counted toward a shared goal: at least one million Trainer victories unlocked the Shiny Zeraora gift in Pokémon HOME. The official event announcement explains the distinction.

The community reached the threshold. Pokémon announced on June 30, 2020, that the gifts were available to claim. The distribution notice also lists a bonus tied to raid victories: one Armorite Ore for each additional 100,000 defeats after the first million, up to 10 Ore at two million defeats.
How the original Shiny Zeraora claim worked
These are the steps eligible players followed during the 2020 US event. The dates below are Pacific Daylight Time; local dates differed in other regions.
Rank #2
- New entries in the main series of Pokémon RPGs arrive on Nintendo Switch simultaneously in late 2019
- The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games take place in the newly discovered Galar Region
- Galar is an expansive region with diverse environments - an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest and craggy, snow-covered mountains
- Fans will have the opportunity to visit Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion
- Newly discovered partner Pokémon join in this new iteration of the games - Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble
- Take part in the raid challenge. Defeat Zeraora in a Max Raid Battle in Sword or Shield. You could not catch the raid Pokémon.
- Meet the HOME transfer condition. From June 17, 2020, at 8:00 a.m. PDT through July 6, 2020, at 4:59 p.m. PDT, deposit a Pokémon into Pokémon HOME or move one from HOME into Sword or Shield. Pokémon’s event page gives the US eligibility dates.
- Claim in mobile Pokémon HOME. Between June 29, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. PDT and July 6, 2020, at 4:59 p.m. PDT, open Mystery Gifts in the mobile version of Pokémon HOME and claim the gift. Pokémon HOME’s Mystery Gift support page says the mobile and Nintendo Switch HOME apps needed to use the same linked Nintendo Account.
The transfer window and gift-claim window were separate: completing the HOME transfer made a player eligible, while the gift still had to be claimed in the mobile app before the distribution deadline.
What the distributed Shiny Zeraora was like
Pokémon’s 2020 distribution notice identifies the gift as a level 100 Electric-type Shiny Zeraora with the Original Trainer name HOME. It had a Hasty nature, Volt Absorb ability, and was delivered in a Cherish Ball. Its moves were Plasma Fists, Close Combat, Blaze Kick, and Outrage. See Pokémon’s official gift details.
