To get to the Nether, build an obsidian frame, light its interior with flint and steel, then step into the purple portal and wait for the transition. Minecraft’s official guide describes this as the ordinary route and recommends preparing for the hazards on the other side.
What you need to activate a Nether portal
- Obsidian blocks for the frame. Minecraft’s guide describes needing “a dozen or so” blocks and shows a compact example; that is an approximate count, not an exact universal requirement. Minecraft’s 2019 guide gives the example.
- Flint and steel to ignite the frame. The in-game tool is crafted from flint and an iron ingot, according to Minecraft’s flint-and-steel guide.
How to build and enter the portal
- Arrange obsidian into a door-shaped frame, leaving the middle empty. The official guide’s compact example has two blocks across the top and bottom and three along each side; it is an example, not a claim that every portal must have precisely that size.
- Use flint and steel on the inside of the frame. When it activates, the opening fills with a translucent purple surface.
- Step into the portal and wait for the transition to the Nether.
What to bring on your first trip
Portal activation does not require armor or weapons, but Minecraft’s guide recommends preparing for the Nether’s dangers. Consider bringing armor, a sword, a bow and arrows, food, a pickaxe, and cobblestone for travel. These are preparation suggestions, not extra ingredients for making the portal.
Edition and version scope
The cited Minecraft pages explain the general portal method and the flint-and-steel recipe, but do not compare Java and Bedrock editions or specify platform- and version-specific behavior. The steps here reflect those official guides; consult guidance for your particular edition if you need an exception-specific answer.
