To reduce particles across Minecraft, Java players can go to Options → Video Settings → Particles and choose Decreased or Minimal. To hide only the particles attached to a potion or other status effect, apply that effect with its hide-particles argument instead. The right method depends on your edition and whether you want fewer effects overall or only a specific effect’s particles.
Reduce particles generally in Java Edition
- Open Options.
- Select Video Settings.
- Set Particles to Decreased or Minimal.
This is a broad client-side reduction, not a separate toggle for each particle type. The Java particle reference notes that some particles may not appear on Minimal: Minecraft Wiki: Particles.

Hide particles for a potion or status effect
When applying an effect, use the optional hide-particles Boolean argument and set it to true. The argument applies to the effect’s particles rather than switching off particles throughout the game. Command syntax can differ between Java and Bedrock and across versions, so check the command autocomplete in your world before running it. The available command reference is community-maintained: Minecraft Wiki: /effect.
What Bedrock players can do
For a status effect in Bedrock, use the hidden-particles argument of /effect, checking in-game autocomplete for the syntax supported by your version. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule documentation does not document a general particle-visibility rule, so a particle gamerule is not an established global switch: Microsoft Learn: gamerule command.

Why command-created particles may still appear
In Java Edition, the /particle command supports normal and force display modes. The historical command reference says force displays particles even when the player’s setting is Decreased or Minimal. If particles from a command block or datapack remain visible, the command may need to be changed; verify its current syntax with in-game help because the reference describes an older version: Minecraft Wiki: /particle.

Choose the method that matches your goal
- Fewer particles throughout the game in Java: lower the Particles setting in Video Settings.
- No particles for one applied status effect: use that effect command’s hide-particles argument.
- Particles emitted with Java
/particle ... force: changing the client setting may not be enough; adjust the command.
