To upgrade one card from Level 15, you need 120,000 Gold and a rarity-specific number of copies; King Tower Level 16 instead requires 14 cards at Level 15 or higher, excluding Tower Troops. Here’s how to check which requirement applies and make progress under Clash Royale’s current system.
Upgrade an individual card to Level 16
For a Level 15-to-16 upgrade, Supercell’s published requirements are 120,000 Gold plus the number of copies shown for that card’s rarity:

These are the full upgrade requirements, not necessarily what remains for your card. Open the card’s upgrade screen to see its current copy progress and the resources you still need. Supercell’s Level 16 progression announcement describes the card and Gold requirements.
Use cards, Wild Cards, Gold, or Gems
Level 16 continues the card-upgrade path using cards and Gold. Wild Cards can contribute to card progress, and Gems are an optional way to complete an upgrade. The Gem amount depends on how many copies you already have, so check the in-game upgrade screen rather than relying on a single quoted cost. Supercell’s December 2025 update notes explain the change, including the removal of Elite Wild Cards.

How to make progress toward the card upgrade
- Choose the card and check its upgrade screen. Confirm its rarity, remaining copies, and Gold requirement before spending resources.
- Put resources toward that card’s remaining requirement. Use available copies or Wild Cards as appropriate, and build up the 120,000 Gold needed for the upgrade.
- Compare the optional Gem completion amount. The amount varies with your existing copy progress; decide in-game whether completing the upgrade that way is worthwhile for you.
- Consider reward chests only if you can access them. Supercell says a Level 16 Magic Lucky Chest provides 7,500 Common Cards—enough for one Common card’s Level 15-to-16 upgrade. The update associates Level 16 chests with Arena 28+; its 5-Star Magic Lucky Chest example is claimable at 11,975 Trophies in Arena 28. This is a high-Arena reward, not a general early-game route.
There is no single upgrade route or timeline that applies to every account: what you need depends on the card’s rarity, your inventory, and its remaining progress. The December 2025 update gives the chest details.
Reach King Tower Level 16
If you mean the King Tower rather than a card, the published requirement for King Tower Level 16 is 14 cards at Level 15 or higher. Tower Troops do not count toward that threshold. You do not need 14 cards at Level 16. When your King Tower Level increases, Supercell says you receive Tower Princess cards and Gold for its upgrade. How account progression works now
Clash Royale’s current account progression uses Collection Levels, not King’s Journey XP. Supercell’s June 2026 recap says King’s Journey and XP were removed and rewards moved to Collection Level milestones. Collection Level is calculated from the levels of owned cards, with five added for each Evolution and Hero form; upgrading any card adds one Collection Level regardless of rarity.
