Check that each mod supports your installed versions before starting a save; multiplayer friends must also use tModLoader.
Before you install Terraria mods
- You need Terraria. The tModLoader Steam listing says ownership of Terraria is required.
- Use tModLoader, not vanilla Terraria. It is a separate Steam library item that can coexist with the base game. Mods installed for tModLoader do not make vanilla Terraria load those mods.
- This walkthrough covers Steam on PC. Steam is the clearest documented route here. Manual installation is described as an advanced alternative, but exact steps for other platforms or manual setup are not established in the available documentation.
Install tModLoader through Steam
- Open the tModLoader page in the Steam store and install the free app. Make sure you own Terraria on Steam as required by the listing.
- Open your Steam Library and launch tModLoader as its own game entry. Do not launch vanilla Terraria if you want to play with mods.
- Allow tModLoader to finish any first-launch setup or updates before opening the mod interface.
Find and enable mods
Choose the Mod Browser or Steam Workshop
Look for mods in tModLoader’s in-game Mod Browser or in the tModLoader Steam Workshop. The Steam listing says Workshop is supported but not required because the in-game browser is available. You can use either route to discover mods.

Download, enable, and reload
- In tModLoader, open the Mod Browser and download the mods you want, or subscribe to them through the tModLoader Workshop.
- Open the mod-management interface and enable the downloaded mods. Interface wording can change between versions.
- If tModLoader prompts you to reload mods, accept the prompt. Reloading applies changes to the active mod set; wait for it to finish before loading a world.
Check version compatibility before starting a world
Mods can stop working when Terraria or tModLoader changes, and the official Steam FAQ warns that some older mods may break or never be updated. Check each mod’s details for the tModLoader and Terraria versions it supports, its dependencies, and whether it is still being maintained. The FAQ lists Terraria versions 1.3.5, 1.4.3, and 1.4.4, but gives no revision date, so that list should not be treated as a current release-compatibility chart. Use the version information shown for your installed tModLoader and the mod itself.
Can you play modded Terraria with vanilla players?
No. The official tModLoader listing says friends joining a tModLoader multiplayer session must also install tModLoader; vanilla Terraria players cannot join that session. Before starting a shared world, coordinate on tModLoader and check that everyone can use the same mod set and compatible versions.
