To accept a friend request, check the Friends interface and account notifications for a pending request; the available acceptance control can vary by platform. A Minecraft friend request is different from a Realm invitation, which has its own acceptance steps.
Send a friend request in Bedrock Edition
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Friends tab.
- Select Add Friend. Depending on the platform or game update, a similar label such as Find Friends may appear.
- Enter your friend’s exact Xbox/Microsoft gamertag and search.
- Choose the matching account and add it.
Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer guide also describes adding a player from the in-world invite interface when you are hosting. Add only people you know and trust.
Accept a friend request
There is no single documented acceptance sequence that applies to every Minecraft edition and platform. Check the Friends interface and your account notifications for a pending request, then accept the matching gamertag if an accept option is shown. If the invitation is for a Realm, use the separate Realm process below instead.
Realm invitations are separate from friend requests
Invite someone to your Bedrock Realm
- Select Play and edit the Realm.
- Open Members. Find or add the player by gamertag if needed.
- Select Invite beside the player’s name.
You can also invite someone with a Realm share link. Minecraft warns that anyone who has the link can join, so do not post it publicly. See Minecraft’s Realm invitation guide.

Accept a Bedrock Realm invitation

Join a friend’s world or Realm
Direct Bedrock world
Both players must be Minecraft friends and online at the same time. The host starts an online world; the other player opens Play > Friends and selects the host under Joinable Friends. Only friends who are online with a joinable world appear there. A Realm works differently: members can join while the Realm host is offline. See Minecraft Help’s guide to joining a Bedrock friend’s world.

Java Edition
Java and Bedrock multiplayer sessions require compatible editions; a Bedrock gamertag friend flow or Bedrock Realm invitation does not automatically apply to Java. For a Java Realm, accept its invitation and look for it among your available Realms, or enter a join code from Minecraft Realms > Join Realm. See Minecraft Help’s Java Realm joining guide and its multiplayer requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you can’t find the request or join your friend
- Confirm the edition. Check that both players are using editions compatible with the multiplayer session.
- Check account sign-in. Console and mobile players may need to sign in or link a Microsoft account. PlayStation cross-platform multiplayer and Realms require linking a Microsoft account to PSN; see Minecraft’s PlayStation account-linking help.
- Review child-account settings. Multiplayer access may be restricted by family settings; check the child account’s permissions.
- Update Minecraft. Minecraft Help recommends the newest release, and mismatched versions can prevent a connection.
- Check whether the host is available. For a direct Bedrock world, the host must be online and have an online world available. A Realm member does not need the host to be online.
- Check console online-service requirements. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online for their respective consoles. Requirements and service names can change, so check the current platform and Minecraft guidance.
- Identify the invitation type. A friend request, Realm inbox invitation, and Realm link or code use different flows.
See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements for account, permission, version, connection, and console-service checks.
