For the classic nine-dot puzzle, draw four connected straight line segments without lifting your pencil. The trick is to let the lines extend beyond the square the dots appear to form. If you mean a color-matching game where paths must not cross, that is a different puzzle and the board determines the route.
How to solve the classic nine-dot puzzle
Arrange nine dots in three rows of three. Draw one continuous path through all nine dots using no more than four straight line segments. Follow this route, keeping the pencil on the page between segments:
- Start at the bottom-right dot. Draw diagonally up and left through the center dot to the upper-left dot.
- From there, draw straight down through the middle-left and bottom-left dots, continuing a little past the bottom-left dot.
- Draw diagonally up and right through the bottom-middle and middle-right dots, continuing beyond the upper-right dot.
- Draw horizontally left through all three dots in the top row.
The four segments pass through every dot. The route works because the puzzle does not require the lines to stay inside the imaginary square formed by the outer dots.
Why the lines may go outside the dots
The FEMA Creative Thinking Dot Activity identifies the assumed square boundary as the hidden constraint that can prevent people from finding a solution. A U.S. government training publication makes the same point: “This unconscious constraint exists only in the mind of the problem-solver; it is not specified in the definition of the problem.” See its discussion of the puzzle in Psychology of Intelligence Analysis.

#1 Best Overall
In the standard version, the rules specify nine dots, four straight segments, and one continuous stroke; they do not say that the path must remain within the dots’ apparent boundary.
If you mean a no-crossing color-path game
Some games use “connect the dots” to mean pairing same-colored dots on a grid without letting paths cross. That is not the nine-dot puzzle above. In Arkadium’s Connect the Dots, the goal also includes filling the entire grid, so simply connecting matching pairs may not complete the board. The game’s instructions and tips, modified July 15, 2026, recommend surveying the board before drawing and looking for patterns. The exact route depends on the board layout.

Rule-dependent variations
The four-line answer applies when lines must be straight, pass through the dot centers, and remain on a flat page. The U.S. government publication also describes variations with different rules: its figure shows a three-line solution when lines need not pass through dot centers, and it describes a one-line spiral when the paper can be rolled into a cylinder. Those are alternatives to the usual puzzle, not the standard solution.

A pencil and paper are enough: draw a three-by-three arrangement of dots and trace the four segments in order. No specialized supplies are needed.
