You can play a two-player version of Double Solitaire with one standard 52-card deck, but it is a house-rule adaptation, not the traditional game. Traditional two-player Double Solitaire gives each player a separate deck. The one-deck rules below split the cards between players and use shared foundations so both players can build the same suit sequences without duplicate-card conflicts.

Traditional Double Solitaire uses two decks

In the conventional two-player game, each player has a separate 52-card pack and their own Klondike-style layout. Players compete to play cards onto shared foundations. Pagat describes both turn-based play and a simultaneous racing format; either way, the usual setup is one deck per player. Pagat’s Double Solitaire rules were last updated on January 24, 2024. Official Game Rules, updated August 27, 2026, also describes one 52-card deck per player.

That is different from Double Klondike, which is a larger solo layout associated with two decks. If you have only one deck and want two people to play, use the adaptation below and agree that these are house rules before dealing.

One-deck, two-player house rules

This format adapts one-deck Klondike mechanics for two players. Standard Klondike uses seven tableau piles, with 28 cards in the tableau and the remaining cards in the stock; the adaptation below changes that layout to give each player a small personal tableau. The cited Klondike activity sheet describes the one-deck structure and core moves.

1. Divide the deck

  1. Shuffle one standard 52-card deck.
  2. Deal all cards alternately, face down, into two personal piles of 26 cards each. Neither player should inspect or rearrange their pile.

2. Build each player’s layout

  1. Each player takes the top six cards of their own pile and deals them face down into three tableau columns: one card in the first column, two in the second, and three in the third.
  2. Turn only the top card of each column face up. Keep the remaining 20 cards face down as that player’s stock.

Each player now has a small Klondike-style tableau, a personal stock and no cards removed from the game. The layouts are deliberately smaller than a standard seven-pile Klondike layout to divide a single deck between two players.

3. Set up shared foundations

Leave space between the players for four shared foundations, one for each suit. Start each foundation with an Ace, then build upward by suit through King. Either player may add the next card in sequence, but may use only cards available from their own tableau or waste. Because each suit has one shared sequence, the players never need to resolve competing copies of the same card.

4. Take turns making legal moves

Players alternate turns. On your turn, you may make any legal move in your own layout before drawing from your stock:

  • Build tableau sequences downward in alternating colors. You may move a face-up ordered run as a unit.
  • Move an available Ace or the next correctly ranked card to a shared foundation when useful.
  • Only a King may be moved into an empty tableau column.

5. Draw from stock and manage the waste

When you have no more useful tableau or foundation moves, turn the top card of your stock face up onto your waste pile. Only the top waste card is playable. Before the first turn, decide whether players may recycle the stock after it runs out. Allowing one recycle gives the game a closer Klondike feel; repeated recycling is another possible house rule, but changes the difficulty.
