Steam has no universal player-side button to undo a game update. You can switch back only if the game’s developer provides a branch with the version you want; Steam’s update setting can postpone a future patch, but it cannot restore files already updated.
Check whether the game offers an older version
- Open Steam Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then open Betas or the game’s version-selection area. Labels and available choices vary by game.
- If the developer offers a branch that matches the version you need, select it and let Steam download the branch’s files.
A branch is an alternate build chosen by the developer; it is not necessarily the game’s immediately preceding public release. Steam’s CS2 instructions demonstrate selecting a beta through Properties, but the choices are specific to each game. For CS2, opting into the beta depot downloads different files and disables official Valve matchmaking while you are using that depot.
Understand the two player-side options
| Option | Use it for | What it does | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choose a developer-provided branch | Returning to a build the game makes available | Installs the files offered on that branch | Availability and version contents depend on the developer; it may not be the previous public release. |
| Change the update preference | Postponing automatic updates | Temporarily disables automatic updating until launch conditions trigger an update | Does not reinstall an older build. Steam says launching the game forces an update. |
Delay future updates, not the update already installed
To defer automatic updating for a game, open Library > game page > Properties > Updates and choose Only update this game when I launch it. Steam documents this setting in its Managing Steam Downloads & Updates guidance. It changes when Steam updates the game; it does not bring back files replaced by a patch. Launching the game forces an update.
If the version you need is not listed
Ask the game’s developer or publisher whether an older build is available on a branch. Steamworks gives developers controls to manage branches and builds, including rolling a build back; those are publishing tools, not controls exposed to players for choosing any historical release. See Steamworks build and branch documentation.

Why older-manifest instructions are not a guaranteed fix
Some guides describe downloading older depot files through manifest identifiers. SteamDB’s technical explanation of manifest access discusses access checks and historical client and CDN behavior. It is dated September 25, 2021, with an update dated May 16, 2022; it is not a current Valve guarantee that a particular game’s older files can be downloaded. Results depend on the game, branch, manifest, access rights, and Steam’s current behavior.
Even if an older build can be obtained, its compatibility with current saves, multiplayer servers, the launcher, or mods is not established for an unspecified game. Check the developer’s instructions before using an alternate build, especially if you rely on online play or mods.
