In Minecraft Java Edition, hold F3 and press G to toggle chunk borders. On a 60% keyboard, send F3 using the board’s documented Fn-layer mapping while pressing G; there is no single Fn sequence that works on every keyboard. Press the shortcut again to turn the borders off.
Show chunk borders with F3+G
- Confirm that you are playing Minecraft: Java Edition. This is a Java debug shortcut, not a Bedrock Edition instruction.
- Use your keyboard’s documented Fn-layer combination to send F3. The key or combination varies by keyboard, so check its manual or keymap rather than assuming a universal Fn order.
- While sending F3, press G. The usual toggle is F3+G; use it again to hide the borders.
Mojang’s issue tracker documents inconsistent debug-shortcut behavior on some keyboard layouts, including an Fn+F3+G example. If F3 opens the debug screen but the borders do not appear, the keyboard’s Fn layer or firmware may be interfering with the combination. See Mojang issue MC-164531.
If F3+G does not work
Check your keyboard mapping
First verify that the key combination actually sends F3, then try F3+G again. Consult the keyboard manual or keymap for the F-key layer and check whether the board’s firmware intercepts the multi-key combination. Layout-specific behavior is documented by Mojang, so a working F3 key does not guarantee that every debug shortcut will work as expected.
Check Debug Options for your game version
Debug controls can differ between versions. Minecraft Java Edition Snapshot 25w31a documents a Debug Options screen opened with F3+F5. Its notes say chunk-border rendering can be configured there: hide it, show it while the debug screen is open, or keep it visible. These are snapshot notes; do not assume that this menu or shortcut is present in every installed release. Read the Snapshot 25w31a notes.

The shortcut differs in other snapshots: Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 Snapshot 4 describes opening Debug Options with F3+F6. Check the Controls or Debug Options screens for your own version instead of relying on a snapshot shortcut from another release. Read the 26.3 Snapshot 4 notes.
Consider reduced debug information
If the toggle appears to register but no borders show, check relevant game settings or restrictions, including reduced debug information. A historical Mojang issue records an interaction with that setting and the chunk-border toggle; it is a possible troubleshooting check, not a universal explanation. See Mojang issue MC-196443.

Why the shortcut may vary
F3 debug controls have changed over time. Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.2 release notes provide older context for changes to debug controls, while later snapshot notes describe version-specific Debug Options shortcuts.
